HELPFUL FACTS ABOUT VEHICLE HAIL DAMAGE. With recent weather events we are seeing more and more vehicles affected by hail. In many cases the owners are not aware of the damage or think it is just a few dents. The really is if your vehicle was in one of the recent hail storms, you should have it looked at by professionals. The general rule of thumb is for every dent you can see there will be 5-10 you cannot see until placed under the proper lighting. With the hail that hit Air...drie on June 13th we are seeing many vehilces from South Airdrie that have small dime sized dents, but several hundred of them. 1) Hail damage is covered under your comprehensive insurance coverage and is considered "No Fault". Making a claim will not affect your risk rating or premiums on your policy. You will only be responsible for the deductible portion which is quite often $250 - $500. 2) Many insurance companies have set up hail repair centres specifically to deal with the massive amounts of hail damage in and around Calgary. These will quite often be temporarily staffed with technicians brought in from across North America to do as many repairs as inexpensively as possible. You can draw your own conclusion on the customer experience in this situation. In Alberta consumer law protects you and says you pick your repair facility, not your insurance company. They can suggest or recommend their provider, but it is up to you were you go and there is no impact on warranty or cost regardless, so don't be told otherwise. 3) The value of your vehicle will be directly impacted by the retail amount of damage done to it and if you are financed on the vehicle or have it under a lease, you will be responsible for paying for the damage when returning the vehicle or will lose that value on trade or resale. 4) You have 2 YEARS from the date of the hail incident to make a claim. Beyond that, you lose any right to recovery.
