You are probably all aware of the recent MAAC Member Survey that was designed to get input from the MAAC Membership on moving the affiliation with the Aero Club of Canada (ACC) and the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) from within the MAAC Constitution (Letters Patent) to the Policy Manual. The survey was badly biased and ambiguous and confusing and to the majority of members, they would be led to being in favour of the Resolution. This would fundamentally be bad f...Continue reading

Unfortunately I am the bearer of sad news. Chris Brownhill, the Zone Director for Zone L, passed away last week. Chris was a longtime MAAC member and a well known leader in the Control Line Community and MAAC as a whole. He will be greatly missed and our thoughts are with his family in this difficult time.... With regards to the position of Zone Director, as the sitting Deputy Zone Director I have accepted the position of Zone Director for the duration of the current term. I will try and match the example that Chris and his predecessors have set in the role. Obituary It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Chris Brownhill who died unexpectedly on September 24, 2020 in Etobicoke at the age of 74. Predeceased by his cherished partner Sylvia and twin brother John. Survived by caring sister in-law Marcia, Chris was a special uncle to Stephen (Tasha), Philip (Colleen), great-uncle to Jonathan and Bethany, and loving friend to his adopted stepchildren Timothy and Alyson (Brian). Loved by extended family members Catherine (Steven), Birgitta (Don), Sonja (Ted). Trusted and loyal friend to Kim, Jack, Ruth, Alexandra and Shirley. Having a passion for aeronautics, Chris was an active glider pilot and instructor at the York Soaring Association, President of the Balsa Beavers Model Flying Club, Vice-president of the Aeroclub of Canada, and was actively involved for many decades with the Model Aeronautics Association of Canada. A quiet and humble champion of integrity and a valued member of his community, Chris was actively involved in the Church of the Atonement, the Jubilee Centre and the Weston King Neighbourhood Centre. Friends may call from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm on Saturday, October 17 at Ridley Funeral Home, 3080 Lake Shore Blvd. W. (between Kipling and Islington). Please note that due to COVID 19, the capacity of the funeral home's facilities is limited. Attendees may have to wait to be admitted to the visitation room. All attendees are expected to wear a mask and respect social distancing guidelines. A private Celebration of Life will take place. In lieu of flowers, Chris would have appreciated a donation to the Weston King Neighbourhood Centre in support of their Annual Community Christmas Dinner: https://www.canadahelps.org//weston-king-neighbourhood-ce/. Greetings Fellow MAAC Members: Everyone is aware of the rapidly changing requirements from Federal, Provincial and local authorities, regarding our freedom to gather and interact socially, in response to the global pandemic, we all face. Some of you have contacted the MAAC office, looking for guidance and direction regarding Club operations, in light of our current situation, vis a vis the COVID-19 pandemic.... In a nutshell, the MAAC constitution stipulates that the individual Clubs are separate and self-managing entities under the MAAC umbrella. We strongly urge you to work within the Federal, Provincial and Municipal government directives and understand that your Zone Director and Club Leadership teams are deliverers and not composers of the guidance you receive. The MAAC Board of Directors is confident that the members and the clubs, will keep abreast of the dynamic social restrictions that are, and will be imposed on us, and abide by all requirements. The MAAC office remains closed as per government direction. Members can renew online. The phones are not being answered, nor are messages being checked. We will get through this together. Peter Schaffer President - MAAC

The Corona Virus - Corvid19 and Model Flying Dear Zone Member, I think that it is time that we gave some thought to the fact that our flying activities at the present might cause some harm to our friends and associates if we insist on flying without considering the importance of reducing our exposure to them. I have had several phone calls from some club presidents asking me what my advice would be on instituting some policies for flying on club fields during these troubling ...times. I think you would be wisest just not to fly until the period of voluntary isolation is over. Also, there is a chance that law enforcement agencies will be empowered to restrict such activities, and nothing good ever comes of that! Some flying fields, like in the town of Burlington, have already been gated by the authorities, and so no activity is possible there no matter what. Maybe it is time to dig out the R/C flight simulator, or the E-Flite helicopter for a quick hop in the living room. The indoor people could build a couple of mini-sticks, and hold a postal meet for the best time obtained in the living room when the better-half isn't looking! So, now is the time for some leadership, and maturity. This situation isn't going to last forever, and I would rather fly in a safe, responsible way, rather than become infected, or worse, infect someone else. As for the club dues we pay, I think we can afford to donate some of that to the survival of our clubs even if we don't get a full season of flying for whatever reason. Yours respectfully, Chris Brownhill, SE Zone Director See more

PLEASE READ... This is very important. I share this point of view too. Make your voice heard. - Athol (MAAC 35223) OF CONCERN TO MAAC MEMBERS There is a survey before the membership which is misleading and very one-sided in its approach.... The results of this survey are intended to be used to determine whether or not, MAAC’s affiliation to the Aero Club of Canada, and through them CIAM/FAI, the international governing bodies for our hobby, should remain entrenched in our constitution as has been the case since MAAC was formed in 1949. The proposal is that this requirement be placed in the Policy Manual where it could easily be eliminated by a 50% plus one majority. The cost of affiliation to these international bodies is approximately $1.50 per member. Apart from its effects on activities outside our borders this affiliation has given us considerable credibility in dealing with such Canadian authorities as Transport Canada and the Radio Advisory Board of Canada. Our right to fly, and to use our radio transmitters is currently assured because those bodies take us seriously. This affiliation also confers on our Canadian members the right to compete in International events. For many of our members this is not an important issue, but for some it is vitally important. We, as an organization, should be prepared to support and protect the rights and freedoms of all of our members, most especially the minorities amongst us. Those among us who represent the majority should not be prepared to support actions that could be used to significantly harm a minority. That is especially true when those actions bring no significant benefit to that majority. In the past MAAC has given some support to international teams, but that is not guaranteed and is an annual board decision. That support is not the issue here. You are urged to consider this issue very carefully. We have maintained this affiliation for over seventy years and used it to advantage. The survey has already been issued, with accompanying opinion that supports a particular viewpoint, and without any discussion of opposite views. If you think that this survey should be declared invalid and not used by the Board of Directors to guide them in decision making, then please make your voice heard. If you think that nothing untoward was done then please make that known too. Your thoughts on this matter are important. It would be appreciated if you respond promptly.
