(English version follows) Salut tout le monde ! C’est officiel ! Nous avons commencé notre travail sur la ferme ! La semaine dernière, nous avons fini nos examens finaux, quelques-un.e.s d’entre nous ont déménagé à Ste-Anne pendant la fin de semaine et nous avons eu notre première journée à temps plein à la ferme lundi ! C’est tellement agréable de se retrouver sous le soleil (et la pluie !) à travailler dehors. Nous avons une semaine bien occupée : Nous devons organiser notr...e espace et préparer nos champs pour les premières plantations cette semaine. Nous sommes tou.te.s très excité.e.s pour une nouvelle magnifique saison à MSEG. À bientot ! Et nous souhaitons un bel été à tou.te.s les étudiant.e.s ! Amour et patates douces, --L’équipe MSEG _________________________________ Hello everyone! It is official--we are back on the farm. Last week we all finished our final exams, some of us moved to Ste. Anne over the weekend, and we started working on the farm this Monday! What a great feeling to be back in the open air. This week is a busy week, setting up our work space, clearing the fields, and preparing for our first plantings! We are all super excited for another wonderful season at MSEG. Bonjour ! Des petites nouvelles de la serre: la semaine dernière nous avons planté toutes nos tomates. Nous avons 12 variétés et nous avons très hâte de les amener aux marchés fermiers et de les partager avec nos membres ASC cet été ! Nous avons aussi taillé nos semis d’Allium. Les Allium sont une famille de plantes incluant: les oignons, les échalotes françaises, et les poireaux, pour en nommer quelques-uns. Nous les taillons dès qu’ils se rendent à une hauteur d'environ 7,...5 cm. Cela permet aux plantes de concentrer leur énergie dans la croissance des racines, ce qui leur permet par la suite de mieux s’adapter à l’environnement extérieur lorsque nous allons les transplanter dans les champs au début mai. Nous vous souhaitons une belle fin de semaine ! Amour et patates douces, --L’équipe MSEG ________________ Greetings everyone! An update on our seedlings. Last weekend we planted all of our tomatoes!! We have twelve different varieties of cherry tomatoes and big tomatoes in all and we cannot wait to bring them to markets and share them with our CSA members this summer. We also trimmed our Allium seedlings. Alliums are the family of plants that include onions, garlic, shallots, green, onions, and leeks to name a few. Once they reach about 7.5 cm in height, we trim our seedlings to encourage them to grow strong root systems so that they will be better equipped for the real world once they are planted out in the field in early May. (English version follows) Bonjour à tou.te.s ! Les trois dernières fins de semaine ont été bien occupées pour nous ! Jusqu’à maintenant nous avons semé tous les oignons, échalotes françaises, poireaux, oignons verts, piments forts, poivrons, et cerises de terre. Nous avons aussi commencé nos semis de bok choy et de broccolini ! Le temps des semis souligne les premières sessions de travail avec les trois stagiaires de cette année : Kayla, Ariel et Julian. C’est très plaisant ...de passer du temps dans la serre afin de mieux apprendre à se connaître avant que nous commencions notre saison à temps plein dans les champs. Nous sommes très heureux.ses d’avoir une belle équipe motivée ! ____________________________ Hello all! The past three weekends have been busy seeding days for us. So far, we have seeded all of our onions, shallots, leeks and green onion, hot peppers, bell peppers, and ground cherries, and we have started planting our first bok choy and broccolini! We have also had our first seeding sessions with this year’s interns, Ariel, Kayla, and Julian. It feels so wonderful to spend the time in the greenhouse to get to know each other before we start off the season in the field. We are so grateful for our wonderful team!

(English version follows) Salut salut! Nous avons de bonnes nouvelles: la fin de semaine dernière nous avons planté nos premiers semis dans la serre ! Nous avons planté des poireaux, des oignons verts, et des piments forts. Quelle satisfaction de finalement commencer le travail manuel après un long hiver de planification devant l’écran ! À MSEG, nous commençons plus de la moitié de nos cultures dans la serre. Cela nous permet d’allonger notre saison relativement courte à Mont...réal. Une fois que les semis sont assez grands, nous les transplantons dans la terre à la ferme. En plus d’allonger la saison, commencer les semis en serre permet aussi aux plantes de devancer les mauvaises herbes, les pestes, et les maladies car ils sont beaucoup plus forts lorsqu’ils émergent en plein sol. Cette semaine nous allons planter des oignons, des échalotes françaises, et des poireaux ! Amour et tomates, L’équipe MSEG ____________________________ Greetings from the greenhouse! We have some exciting news! This past weekend we started our work in the greenhouse--planting seedlings!! We planted leeks, green onions, and hot peppers. It feels so good to begin the manual work of our season after a winter of planning behind a computer screen! At MSEG, we start over half of our crops as seedlings in the greenhouse. This enables us to get a head start on the season and to extend our relatively short growing season in Montreal. Once they are grown, we will transplant the seedlings into the garden beds at the farm. In addition to extending the growing season, growing transplants as opposed to seeding directly into the ground also enables the plants to get a head start on the weeds, pests, and diseases as transplants are much less fragile than emerging seedlings. (English version follows) Qui aurait pensé que nous aurions une dernière récolte à la fin novembre ! La fin de semaine dernière, nous avons récolté nos dernières carottes, chou-rave, broccolini et chou frisé. C’est génial, nous allons avoir de beaux légumes locaux et grandis avec amour pour l’hiver qui approche ! -----------------------------------------------------------------... Who would have thought we would still be harvesting the second-to-last weekend of November! Amazingly enough, we harvested carrots, kohlrabi, broccolini and kale and filled up our fridge for the winter. How wonderful to have local produce grown with love for the long winter months ahead.

(English version follows) La saison 2020 est officiellement terminée. Nous avons préparé nos champs pour l’hiver et avons fini le gros ménage de notre entrepôt. Bien que la fin de la saison soit un temps mélancolique, ce temps marque aussi une transition importante à MSEG. Les gérants de cette année, Hugo, Alice, et Isa doivent maintenant partir pour laisser la place aux stagiaires Michelle, Snehan et Jasmine qui vont prendre la relève. Toutefois, le travail n’est pas termin...é! Nous devons maintenant commencer notre planification pour l’année prochaine. Nous devons choisir et commander nos semis et surtout embaucher les stagiaires pour l’année prochaine. Si vous êtes intéressés à devenir un.e stagiaire pour MSEG 2021, restez à l’affût pour l’info d’embauche qui arrive bientôt! Merci encore à tou.te.s nos membres ASC et à tou.te.s qui nous ont encouragé cette année. We closed up our fields last week and finished the big clean-up of our storage facility. Phew!! Though the end of the season is a melancholy farewell to summer, it is also an exciting time of transition at MSEG. The managers from the 2020 season, Hugo, Alice, and Isa will now leave the project and the 2020 interns, Michelle, Snehan, and Jasmine will step in and take on their new position as managers. Though wintertime is much quieter than the bustle of summer on the farm, there is still much to do. It’s time to begin planning for next season: seedlings, field map, and of course, hiring new interns! If you are interested in becoming part of the 2021 MSEG team, stay tuned for more info coming soon!
