One of the best parts about being in the hospitality industry are the people that you meet. Tonight, like many nights, we have guests from all over - the Yukon, Ontario, British Columbia, Kentucky, New Hampshire, Michigan. It's a real privilege to get to know and connect with our guests - and as our 73rd year in business will be coming to a close next month, we can't help but look forward to doing it all again next year. #blindriver #algoma #northernontario #canada #motel #campground

Today I sent this letter to the Minister of Environment, Conservation, and Parks, with cc to Ontario Parks, about the washout at Aubrey Falls. We are getting r...eally frustrated by the lack of action on this. Please help by sharing this widely. Your comments (with pics of you/family/friends at the Falls) would also help. Environment Ontario Ontario Parks The Honourable Jeff Yurek, Minister of Environment, Conservation and Parks Dear Minister Yurek: As owners of a drive-in tourist resort in the Mississagi Valley, in the Algoma District of Northern Ontario, our ability to attract tourists is almost exclusively dependent on the natural beauty of this area. We are writing to ask you to restore access to one of our most important tourism values. The entrance road to Aubrey Falls Provincial Park was washed out in a storm almost two years ago. (See attached image). No one has been able to drive in to the trailhead since. Ontario Parks and your Ministry have been contacted numerous times by individual tourism operators, our local Members of Parliament, Destination Northern Ontario, and the Algoma Kinniwabi Tourist Association, asking that the washout be repaired. There has been no action taken. Aubrey Falls has been a well-known attraction for tourists in this area at least since the early twentieth century. It was the popularity of the Falls with tourists in the area that led my (Michael's) parents to choose this location to establish Allen's Camp, now known as Aubrey Falls Trading Post, in the early 1950's. When plans were made to cut off the flow over the Falls with the building of the dam and generating station, my mother rallied other tourist operators in the area and successfully fought to keep the Falls. Subsequently, the value of the falls as a tourist attraction was recognized by the government of the day, Aubrey Falls Provincial Park was established and the funds invested to develop an accessible attraction with a road to the parking area at the trailhead, washrooms and an interpretive display. The trail itself was made more accessible for those with mobility issues, and safety improved with fencing and a swinging bridge over the gorge. But with Ontario Parks' and your Ministry's current failure to commit to repairing the washout on the road to the trailhead, it appears that this investment in infrastructure is going to waste, and that the fight to keep this beautiful and historical site as a tourist attraction is not finis. Aubrey Falls has historical value in that Tom Thomson was inspired by his stay at the falls in 1912 to become a painter more than a photographer, and to encourage the members of the future Group of Seven to visit and paint in the Algoma region. This fact has been recognized by the selection of this site for inclusion in the Group of Seven tour promoted by Tourism Ontario and the Algoma Kinniwabi Tourism Association. The beauty and history of the Falls have made it an ideal destination for artists and photographers for many years. Aubrey Falls is a key attraction and a "must see" destination for the majority of the approximately 6000 guests per year who spend their vacation in the resorts, B&B's and motels of the Mississagi Valley, not to mention the towns of Thessalon, Iron Bridge, and beyond. According to Ministry of Tourism figures, this represents more than $3million brought in to the local economy. Given the competition for tourism dollars, Aubrey Falls as an attraction has a significant impact for the whole area. Aubrey Falls is also an important scenic stop on the popular Grand Algoma driving and motorcycle tour, thus extending its economic impact to the whole Algoma region. Since the road was washed out, very few of our guests have undertaken what is now a much longer and more dangerous hike into the falls; we continue to hear of many others who have driven the 40 miles only to have to turn around when they found they could not drive in to the trailhead as usual. Word of disappointments like this does not take long to spread among potential visitors. We have been told by Ontario Parks that since this a "Non-Operating Park" and does not generate income, it has low if any priority for investment of funds to repair the road. This is concerning enough, but perhaps an even greater concern is whether the necessary funds will be available to maintain the trail in a safe condition, particularly the swinging bridge over the gorge. Simply providing the funds to replace the culverts and fill in the washout is all that is required to resolve this issue. We have already waited two years for that resolution. We trust that, as the Minister responsible, it is within your power to expedite such a simple and inexpensive fix. Sincerely, Michael Allen and Gillian Lloyd Kegos Camp 8404 Hwy 129, Thessalon, ON
