We are thrilled to announce the appointment of John G Hampton as our new permanent Executive Director and CEO! I am humbled and incredibly proud to take on this work with such an inspiring team and community. The MacKenzie is my hometown gallery, and it has played an integral role in shaping some of my earliest understandings of the role of art and culture in our society, says Hampton. I am honoured to be asked to continue the trailblazing work of forerunners like Bob Bo...yer, Lee-Ann Martin, Kate Davis, and so many more, as we work to live up to our role as caretakers of culture in this territory. The MacKenzie has an exciting future ahead of it, and I intend to bring a spirit of interdependence, innovation, trust, wonder, and respect as we celebrate the deep art history of this land in tandem with the most innovative practices and conversations happening in Canada and beyond. In this week's Studio Sunday, brought to you by Canada Life Co, we were inspired by Donovan Chester's Raku artwork! Chester has used Raku firing methods for many years and has become a master of this firing process. An old Japanese firing technique, Raku involves loading the clay into an already hot kiln. Chester often uses a mold as a starting point in his production, and this week, we want you to do the same! For more information on the activity and the artwork, visit our w...ebsite: mackenzie.art/donovan-chester/. Image credit: Donovan Chester, "Untitled", 1991, raku. Delicately poised between critique and tribute, Tammi Campbell’s paintings and drawings walk softly amid the modernist legacy of twentieth-century abstraction. Born in Calgary and raised in Moose Jaw, Campbell is a graduate of the University of Saskatchewan (BFA 1999) and has attended artists’ workshops at Emma Lake (2001, 2003, 2007). In her experimental work, Campbell offers a feminist reading of modernist art history through an open-ended, material re-enactment of some fou...ndational figures with historical connections to the development of modernist painting in Saskatchewan. "Monochrome with white paint and poly sheeting" (2016) exemplifies her investigation of trompe l’oeil techniques in which the medium of acrylic paint takes on the physical appearance of materials from the artist’s studio. Wanda Koop is an artist who has consistently worked in a wide range of scales, from the note-sized to the colossal. The four paintings, three in the exhibition "As It Unfolds" (pictured below) and one above the MacKenzie’s entry staircase, are from Koop’s series "Sightlines" (2001), which represents the culmination of a decade of painting and thinking. The artworks are among her largest paintings. They allow an appreciation of her unique ability to translate the gestural qual...ity of an intimate brushstroke on a monumental scale. The genesis of this series dates to 1991, when Koop visited the Bois de Vincennesthe largest public park in Paris, France. While in the gardens, Koop captured through a window the video image of a landscape obscured by a red dot of the type affixed to glass to ward off birds.
