Maclab Centre for the Performing Arts 21.06.2021

Providing a safe environment for our guests, performers and staff has always been one of our highest priorities at the Maclab Centre for the Performing Arts. That is why following the most recent Alberta public health guidelines announced on Jan. 29, our current performance series has been cancelled. Despite the unexpected twists and turns this pandemic has brought, your Maclab team remains dedicated in our commitment to supporting the local performing arts scene and ensuring that music, dance and theatre thrive in our community. We thank you for your support and hope to gather once again in the near future.

We are very sad to hear of the passing of Bobby Cairns. He was influential in the Edmonton region and an excellent supporting musician to many - including the River City Big Band who played with us earlier this year. #RIPBobbyCairns

Today, we, along with venues across Canada, are proud to participate in the Day of Visibility for the Live Event Community and light up our facility in red to bring awareness for an industry that still remains dark. We recognize the devastating effects COVID-19 has on our Canadian event industry professionals whose passions and livelihoods were greatly impacted. We miss you and we can’t wait to see you come through our doors in the near future. More than two months have passed since our world, as we knew it, has turned upside down, and we hope that you are safe, connected, and well. As we began to realize that many of the uncertainties of this new world will remain with us for some time to come, we have to face the challenges of offering a safe live performance season in the theatre, in the way that we have all come to know and love, until the new year and perhaps longer. We are asking if you could take just a few ...minutes to fill out the survey below, giving us your thoughts and suggestions. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/2SR876F

Today’s #discoveryourinspiration staff pick comes from our Arts, Culture and Heritage Manager who’s musical journey has been inspired by countless people. One of them is former Edmonton Symphony Orchestra’s (ESO), double bassist, Rhonda Taft. When I was a child, my parents would take me to see the Edmonton Symphony and one of the performers on stage had the most beautiful hair I had ever seen in my memory it went all the way to the floor. Obviously, only a princess could p...ossibly have hair that long and beautiful, so that woman playing that giant instrument was clearly a princess. When I had the opportunity to choose my own stringed instrument, I chose the double bass, feeling quite certain this was my ticket to becoming a royal. I’m still waiting on that, but I have had a fantastical career as a musician that has taken me around the globe and allowed me to play on stage next to Rhonda Taft, who is the reason I play the double bass. Rhonda retired from the ESO back in 2016 after more than 50 years performing with them after being one of the youngest members to join the bass section in 1966. While you can no longer catch Taft with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, you can follow ESO with their digital series, Live at the Winspear: From Stage to Screen and re-watch some of their latest work at https://www.winspearcentre.com/livestreams/ Image from Edmonton Symphony Orchestra
