With cases of EHV-1 now confirmed within the area, we wanted to remind everyone of the huge importance of biosecurity in preventing the spread. Biosecurity measures include reducing travel of horses to and from the barn, quarantining new horses for two to three weeks ( taking temperatures twice daily), and ensuring staff, riders and boarders are not traveling to and from other farms without taking reasonable precautions (washing hands, cleaning footwear, etc.). The vaccination available is suggested to be helpful in reducing the spread but does not guarantee protection against EHV-1. The available Flu/Rhino vaccination typically provides a 6 month coverage. Below are several helpful links for further information about EHV-1. https://aaep.org/horsehealth/ehv-1-outbreaks https://www.oahn.ca//20/04/OAHN-EHM-infographic-FINAL-.pdf

Left unattended sharp enamel points can cause significant cheek and tongue ulcers. This 7 year old was recently purchased with no known history of dental care. Routine annual floating can prevent these ulcers. This horse will heal quickly now that the offending points have been removed. Stay tuned for our upcoming dental floating promotion running Nov 1st to Feb 28th #equinedentalhealth#equinehealth #equinemedicine#macleodequine #lifeofavet#health#horses#veterinarymedicine
