Hindgut acidosis is a condition in which the hindgut of the horse becomes excessively acidic. It is usually caused by too much starch in the horse’s diet, resulting in increased production of lactic acid in the lower intestinal tract. When lactic acid levels rise, the result is a lower pH environment in the hindgut and disturbances to the microbial population. This can also result in inflammation in the intestinal wall and decreased resistance to pathogens and toxins found in... feed. Hindgut acidosis can have meaningful consequences for your horse’s overall well-being, including decreased nutrient absorption and feed efficiency, increased risk of hindgut ulcers, and increased risk of digestive or immune complications. Prevention and treatment of hindgut acidosis start with dietary management. Ensuring that your horse’s feeding program is designed to minimize starch overload is an important first step. Eliminate or reduce feeding grain and concentrates. Give your horse access to high-quality forages at least 12 hours per day. You may also want to consider feeding digestive support supplements such as probiotics, yeast, or digestive enzymes. Learn more at https://madbarn.ca/hindgut-acidosis-in-horses/

Copper (Cu) is an essential trace mineral that is required in the equine diet to support the proper function of many enzymes in the horse’s body. Copper is important for iron metabolism, healthy connective tissue, energy production and antioxidant protection. Horses might be low in copper due to low levels in their diet or because their diets have high levels of zinc (Zn) or iron (Fe). Excess intake of zinc or iron can interfere with copper absorption from the gut.... Copper and zinc levels need to be carefully balanced with each other to ensure proper absorption of both minerals from the digestive tract. A three-to-one (3:1) ratio of zinc to copper is recommended for most horses. Learn more about the top 10 benefits of copper for horses in our new article https://madbarn.ca/copper-benefits-for-horses/

Adding 20 mg of biotin to a well-balanced diet can improve your horse's hoof health and coat quality by supporting the production of the protein keratin. Biotin is present in small quantities in most feedstuffs which is why supplementation is recommended for horses, especially those with dry, cracked or brittle hooves, those that pull shoes often or those with chronic laminitis. Mad Barn's Omneity Equine Mineral and Vitamin supplement provides complete B-vitamin fortificati...on including biotin levels clinically validated to improve hoof growth. Hear what competitive rider Claudia Iannuccilli has to say about how Omneity helped her horses' hooves: "Omniety has become a must have in my stable for all the horses whether they are currently competing or at the retirement stage. Their overall health has improved since starting on omniety, 3 years ago, with beautifully shiny coats and strong healthy feet." "My retired event horse lived in shoes his whole life and would be instantly lame the second his shoe came off. After 6 months of being on omniety he pulled a shoe one day and to my surprise he was sound!" "I knew his feet had improved but was amazed at the change. They got better and better as old hoof grew out and new hoof came in. If there was one thing I wouldn't live without for my horses diet it would be Omniety and the same goes for my students horses."

Mad Barn’s 3:1 Zinc Copper supplement provides the essential minerals Zinc (Zn) and Copper (Cu) in the correct three to one ratio to balance most equine diets. One scoop supplies the recommended 300 mg of zinc and 100 mg copper for a 500 kg horse. Horses that are already on Mad Barn's Omneity or AminoTrace+ mineral and vitamin supplements generally do not need more zinc or copper in their diet. But if your horse is not currently on a comprehensive mineral and vitamin suppleme...nt, this product may be a cost-effective option for you. Our 3:1 Zinc Copper powder is composed of Bioplex Zinc and Copper. Bioplex trace minerals are organic minerals in the form of proteinates meaning they are bound to amino acids. This makes them more readily absorbed and metabolized in the body compared to inorganic minerals. Bioplex Zinc proteinate and Copper proteinate are chelated minerals that have higher bioavailability compared to inorganic minerals, improved safety and improved utilization by the body. Copper and zinc are required for the horse to make keratin, a protein that is found in hair and hooves. Horses with low levels of copper and zinc might have a coat that is frizzy, dull, or discolored. Zinc and copper supplied in a 3:1 ratio supports a shiny, healthy coat and healthy skin.
