Valentine’s Day on Sunday, and the Family Day holiday in many provinces on Monday! However you are celebrating this weekend, if you do have to be out on the roads, please be sure to drive sober, or arrange for a sober ride. Driving impaired is NEVER worth the risk.

Youth education is a critical part of MADD Canada’s strategy to preventing impaired driving. We understand that the long-term solution to the problem of impaire...d driving is to get our message out while youth are forming beliefs and patterns of behaviour. MADD Canada continues to support youth education with the development of our online / virtual school presentations. As cliché as this sounds, I became a police officer to help people, bottom line. When I pull a vehicle over and smell alcohol, I’m thankful because the driver ...could have potentially taken a life, seriously injured someone, or seriously injured or killed themselves. I have pulled over vehicles literally driving all over the highway, zig-zagging from one side to the next, or driving towards oncoming traffic and not even knowing there was a semi truck heading right for them, almost causing a head-on collision. I remember being in elementary school and I would always be so excited for the DARE presentations in the gym. I was so proud to receive a DARE award in grade six for writing a paper on the use of drugs and alcohol. I always looked up to the DARE officer in North Bay, Ontario, and dreamed about being a police officer like her one day. Now that I am, I hope to positively influence youth and talk about making good decisions and understanding there are consequences to everyone’s actions. Thank you Cst. Alexa Dubeau for sharing your story! Cst. Dubeau was recently one of the recipients of the Van de Vorst Family Award through Mothers Against Drinking and Driving for her work taking impaired drivers off SK roads. So far in her policing career she’s taken approximately 30 impaired drivers off our roads.
