I’m having a hard time finding joy today. There. I said it. This time has been absolutely draining on me. Having to watch my kids suffer the consequences of the current covid lockdown is awful. Having to explain to them over and over that we can’t have their friends over for birthday parties (yay, winter babies), that their classes are cancelled, that they can’t come to the store with us... they are full of confused energy, and as a parent, that is exhausting. Plus the toddl...er won’t sleep. But I’m going to choose joy. It’s going to be hard. I’ll be bone-deep exhausted by the end of the day from fighting the urge to just stare at the wall all day. But today. I will choose joy. When I was pregnant with my first, I thought I would remember everything about the baby I was about to have. I remember the first time I saw him. I remember holding him while he slept for almost the first entire 2 months of his life. I remember cranking the heat and only dressing him in onsies (first time parent ). I remember taking him out of his cradle in our room and feeding him in another room so I wouldn’t wake my husband. I remember the absolute terror the postpar...tum anxiety made me feel. I don’t remember the first time I held him. I don’t remember the last night he slept beside my bed. I don’t remember the first time he smiled (I do remember that he took FOREVER to smile). I don’t remember being happy. I remember not wanting newborn photos. I remember not wanting to do much of anything. You won’t remember nearly as much as you thought you would. And you’ll want to remember all of the good moments. It’s the first night in a loooong time I’ve just sat down after everyone is in bed and had nothing pressing to do. No editing. No cleaning. No laundry. Just time to be. I truly don’t take time for myself. It’s so hard. With the pressures of four kids constantly needing something, taking the time to fill my cup hasn’t been a priority. So it’s nice to just sit in the quiet and be. Talk to God. Read a book. Watch a show. So, this is my life in a nutshell, as captured by the very talented @amberbourret . I’ve heard it a good thing when your kids are happier with you than anywhere else - it means you’ve fostered a strong attachment with them. It’s a good thing. It can also be chaotic, overwhelming, exhausting. But it’s just beyond anything I’d ever anticipated for myself. Parenting took me by surprise. I was NOT prepared for any of it. I had no experience with tiny babies. Suffice it to say, ...my expectations didn’t match the reality.
