A protest against child medical-transition and gender identity in schools drew a divided crowd of a couple hundred people this past Saturday, April 10, 2021, outside the VAG. . The lineup of speakers during the event included Maxime Bernier, leader of the People’s Party of Canada and former-Conservative MP Derek Sloan. . Paul Dirks, pastor and the event’s emcee, began the event by calling the medical transition of youth one of the greatest evils taking place in our country... at this time. . The event was organized in support of a BC father sentenced to jail after violating court orders while trying to stop his child from gender transition therapy. . Speeches called out B.C.’s Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity 123 program (SOGI 123) in schools and Bill C-6 (banning conversion therapy) as infringements to parental rights. . The event also drew a crowd of counter-protesters such as trans-ally Owen Unruh. . I think that this fundamentally is an anti-trans rally...which is a hate thing which is an attack on the LGBTQ community and trans people specifically and I can’t sit by and let that happen. . Members of the VPD positioned themselves within the crowd to deescalate heated debates amongst protesters as a caravan of LGBTQ2S+ supporters circled Robson Square. . #yvr #transrights #childrensrights #parentalrights #vancouverprotest #photojournalism See more
Women speak up about the effect that the pandemic has had on their mental health in a recent story by @samanthamccabe_ for @thetyee . We need policymakers to invest in economic initiatives that are going to address the impact this pandemic has had on women- Genesa Greening, president and CEO of the BCWHF . It’s really problematic, I think. Being a person of colour... I feel like everyone is really at a point where they’re really overwhelmed and no one knows what’s g...oing to happen - Nidha Yaqub . I feel a little bit like I’ve lost my freedomthere’s no breaks, I can’t get away from home anymore. - Laura Dupont . I feel like I’ve become an educator of what disabilities are, but I’m exhausted. I’m very, very tired. And it can be shocking how people feel about disability and their lack of empathy towards it. So that has definitely affected my mental health. - Jami Watson . Everything that we had been juggling and dealing with just broke. And I just sobbed and sobbed. - Kylie McMullan See more
