Maggie's Hill Heritage Loghouse 20.11.2020

As we get ready for winter on Maggie’s Hill, we spend a lot of time raking our leaves. But we are not raking to get them off the lawn but rather we rake them off the deck and into the gardens and onto the lawn. We also leave many of our tall stalks with their seed pods in place in the flower gardens to help feed and protect the birds when the cold winds blow. It is all about keeping our environment as natural as possible and living in harmony with the land. Plus our winter garden with frost coated tall stalks looks mighty pretty too! #natureconservancyofcanada #keepyourleaves https://northernontario.ctvnews.ca/canadians-being-urged-to

Let’s talk about leaners. People often ask me what wildlife they need to watch out for while hiking the Maggie’s Hill trails but leaners are probably your greatest danger in the woods. Eventually these leaners will come down and you just never know when so I always advise my guests to not walk under a leaner. These leaners can be pretty tricky to take down as well. You never know if they are going to kick backwards or which direction that they may roll when they are coming do...wn. I well remember the time that one of the leaners I was dealing with actually took down three other trees around me as it finally came down. I constantly watch for leaners on the trails and try to get them to the ground as safely and as soon as possible. But it seems the woods change every night around here so if you are out walking and you see a leaner, do not walk under it. If it looks particularly precarious please let me know and I will take care of it right away. Today I removed 4 leaners from the trails and I think I got them all for now. We shall see tomorrow. In the meantime Happy Hiking and stay safe out there! #maggieshillheritageloghouse #woodswalk #hikingtrails See more

This is my favourite time of year...harvest time! As I pick apples to make apple butter and apple sauce for the long winter months ahead, I reflect on the pioneers like Maggie and John who could not simply just nip out to a grocery store whenever they needed food. Instead these pioneers turned every usable space into useful gardens. There was no such thing as ‘lawns’. The land around their house was planted with vegetables that were harvested, pickled, canned and stored in the fruit cellar for the long winter ahead. In this blurry photo taken in 1911 of John and Maggie with their eldest child Myrtle, you can see all the lovely produce growing in the yard of Maggie’s Hill. #harvest #maggieshillheritageloghouse #pioneers #strathconacounty
