Good morning Mittens the Kittens and how are you this morning? What? You are very, very upset and worried because Rusty the Stray Cat has been gone for 2 days. You are not sleeping because you are missing him so much. You sit by the door day and night looking out and waiting for him to return because you need your best friend to come home. Life without him is empty, sad and pointless. So this morning you want me to let you go out and find him so that you can bring him back ...home where he belongs in his tiny house on the front veranda. Because to be happy, you need to see him everyday when you look out the window. You think that he may have gotten lost and he needs you to help him find his way back to you. Oh Mittens, I am sorry that you are so worried about him. I am watching and waiting for him to come back too. But we have to understand that Rusty is an old tomcat and every now and then, tomcats need to go on little adventures. And sometimes they can be gone for days like he has done before but he always comes back because he knows that he has a warm cozy little bed and a bowl full of food waiting for him here at home. As I was enjoying the noon day sun yesterday, I found this nest. It had fallen out of the lilac tree beside the house. And I knew that it had belonged to a family of Robins who lived there last summer. Yes the mother robin had spent her summer with me in the garden for I often seen her coming and going from the big lilac tree. And sometimes I would see her sitting on top of the wishing well enjoying the going’s on around her. I knew that she was a good mom for she was alway...s around watching over her nesting place. So it made me sad to find her cozy little nest that was so well made, on the ground. And just like I used to do when I was a kid, I will try to secure the nest back up in the tree so that in the spring when the birds return, their little home will be waiting for them. Gnomes have been seen in many places throughout the world especially in the Scandinavian countries of Europe. So you may be wondering how did this little fella find his way to my front yard on a wintery Sunday afternoon? Well that’s a story to be told for sure. You see a long time ago there was a ship that sailed across the sea from Ireland. And on that ship there was a big trunk belonging to a woman called Winnie. And in that trunk there was a bunch of little stowaways who j...ust happened to be gnomes. When the ship landed on the Gaspe Coast, well those little gnomes found themselves a place to call home in the hills of Irishtown. And that is where they can still be found living in the forest behind my house. Yes I know quite a bit about these little fellas because they have told me many tall tales throughout the years and you can be sure that it is all a very good thing! These are the days of January 2021. Like so many other things that have changed in the past year, the weather did as well. Instead of the freezing cold, snowy and windy days that we usually get during the first month of the year, it feels more like the sunny days of the month of March out there. Mother Nature probably figured that since we are all stuck at home these days, she would give us some nice weather so that we could spend more time outside. And after a busy week of this and that, I sat back last night with a good cup of tea and picked up my box of crayons and watercolours.
