#ireadcanadian week continues with this wonderful book! The marriage of words and image is a trend in contemporary art: visual artists are painting words, phrases, and sentences onto their canvases. Taking this trend and applying it to a children's book, Charles Pachter, one of Canada's pre-eminent visual artists, has reviewed forty years of work and matched a blend of familiar and new images with words that explore the idea of Canada. From 'Alberta' and 'autumn', through 'be...aver' and 'butter tart', to a portrait of Margaret Atwood ('poet'), this beautiful book will delight children, parents, and grandparents alike. It contains reproductions of iconic paintings, such as the Queen patting a moose, and paintings of historical Canadian figures Pierre Elliot Trudeau, Susanna Moodie, and Wilfrid Laurier, along with short biographies for parents. Also included is the Canadian National Exhibition prize-winning recipe for butter tarts and a complete list of all illustrations in the book. With his talent joyfully evident on every page, M is for Moose celebrates Charles Pachter's continuing fascination with the marriage of words and images, his love of Canada, and his depth of understanding of our history. We are now open every day from 10-5! Max of 4 persons in the shop at one time.

Another wonderful Canadian author for #ireadcanadian week! Big sky, big sky, what is bigger than the sky? In this clever concept book for young readers, award-winning author Jo Ellen Bogart explores the size of animate and inanimate objects and their place in the universe. She introduces children to the concept of we that humans are a big part of the world, but a small part of existence.... In the vastness of the universe, with galaxies swirling through space, the book begins with simple words printed on the darkness. Moving closer to our world, we see the solar system, our sun at the center. Closer still, we see the huge ball of fire, which is the sun, and the third planet out from it our blue Earth. From Earth looming huge on the page, young readers view smaller and smaller objects, from mountain to tree to man to child to kitten to mouse to flea to microscopic beings, amazing in their complexity. Accompanied by artist Gillian Newland’s lavish watercolor paintings, Big and Small, Room for All places the immensity and wonder of space in perspective so young readers comprehend they are part of creation, but a small part of all that exists. We are now open daily 10-5, maximum 4 persons in the shop at one time. We continue to offer free local delivery!

Rife with unexpected beauty, The Glass Hotel is a captivating portrait of greed and gu...ilt, love and delusion, ghosts and unintended consequences, and the infinite ways we search for meaning in our lives. Our store will be open for shopping again starting tomorrow! We still offer curbside pickup or free local delivery.

A fun re-imagining of the roots of our nation's favourite game with vibrant, photo-realistic artwork from veteran nature writer and artist Jeffrey Domm. When two ravens excitedly chisel away at a piece of ice on a frozen pond, a curious wolf pack approaches to investigate the ruckus. They step onto the slippery ice and scare off the birds. But the chunk of ice flies between the wolves, who soon start passing the "puck" back and forth. The game is on! Playfully deking and diving with the ravens cheering them on, the wolves slip and slide in a game of wild pond hockey. Jeffrey C. Domm is a Nova Scotia author and illustrator. He has written more than 30 children's books, including Eagle of the Sea, Atlantic Puffin and The Hatchling's Journey.

G. K. Chesterton’s Father Brown may seem a pleasantly doddering Roman Catholic priest, but appearances deceive. With keen observation and an unerring sense of man’s frailtiesgained during his years listening to confessionsFather Brown succeeds in bringing even the most elusive criminals to justice. This definitive collection of fifteen stories, selected by the American Chesterton Society, includes such classics as The Blue Cross, The Secret Garden, and The Paradise of Thieves. As P. D. James writes in her Introduction, We read the Father Brown stories for a variety pleasures, including their ingenuity, their wit and intelligence, and for the brilliance of the writing. Magic Pebble Books 17.06.2020

The title of Kiley Reid's debut novel, ‘Such a Fun Age’, works on so many levels....and, what's better, the title's plurality of meaning is echoed all over the place within the novel, where both plot and dialogue are layered with history, prejudice, expectations, and assumptions. The title's "fun age" might refer to one of the two main characters, Emira Tucker, a 25-year-old black woman who keenly feels that working part-time as a babysitter and part-time as a typist doesn't ...count as true adulting. It might refer to her charge, Briar, a white three-year-old whose imagination and speech patterns are so charmingly true to a particular kind of kid that she's both instantly recognizable and entirely her own person. More broadly, the "fun age" might be our own, prior to the 2016 [US] election an age that was considered by some to be magically post-racist and post-sexist because it was impolite to be these things in public; an age of performative white feminism; an age of social media and virality and armchair activism and online virtue-signaling that ironically requires certain people often, those already more vulnerable to exist in specific politically correct ways while letting others usually, those with power and privilege off the hook. Don't let all these layers put you off the wonder of Such a Fun Age is that it is also a page-turner with beautifully drawn characters and a riveting plot. - NPR.org

At an early age, Ruth Reichl discovered that "food could be a way of making sense of the world. . . . If you watched people as they ate, you could find out who they were." Her deliciously crafted memoir, Tender at the Bone, is the story of a life determined, enhanced, and defined in equal measure by a passion for food, unforgettable people, and the love of tales well told. Beginning with Reichl's mother, the notorious food-poisoner known as the Queen of Mold, Reichl introduce...s us to the fascinating characters who shaped her world and her tastes, from the gourmand Monsieur du Croix, who served Reichl her first soufflé , to those at her politically correct table in Berkeley who championed the organic food revolution in the 1970s. Spiced with Reichl's infectious humor and sprinkled with her favorite recipes, Tender at the Bone is a witty and compelling chronicle of a culinary sensualist's coming-of-age. - Goodreads See more
