Did you ever expect your living room would be turned into a dance studio? Probably not, but virtual dance classes are part of our current reality. While in-person classes aren’t possible, virtual dance classes are an excellent alternative to face-to-face training. Social connection is critical to our kids’ wellbeing. It can help them regulate their emotions, lead to higher self-esteem and empathy, and even improve our immune systems all of which are significant benefits ...anytime, but especially now when we’re trying our hardest to stay healthy. Relationships with friends and dance teachers also provide positive conversation and interaction during stressful or lonely times. Virtual social experiences can lead to happier and more fulfilled kids, despite our distance from one another. Learn more about the value of virtual classes over on our blog! See more

Yesterday’s news comes with so much disappointment for us and our dance families. Please refer to your inbox for specific updates regarding your MDA classes. On a positive note, we wanted to let you know how very proud we are of all of the dancers so far this season. Their work in & out of the classroom has been wonderful to watch & a joy to teach. We honestly couldn’t be happier, especially given the circumstances how much your dancers commitment & effort has shown through. ... We look forward to continuing this journey with the dancers & thank you ALL more than ever for being so adaptable & staying the course with us. Thanks, Gillian & Diana

February is Black History Month. Did you know that tap dance originated in the early 19th century at the crossroads of African and Irish American dance forms? When slave owners took away traditional African percussion instruments, slaves turned to percussive dancing to express themselves and retain their cultural identities. Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, Gregory Hines, and Savion Glover are prominent Black pioneers of modern tap.

IMPORTANT STUDIO UPDATE At 3:30 pm yesterday Dr Deena Hinshaw and Premier Jason Kenney announced that AHS and the Alberta government will be proceeding with mandatory restrictions and dance studios have been included in the temporary closures. Dance studios across the city, ours included, have done an exceptional job of taking every precaution to keep our dancers/the studio & teachers safe, and we will observe the two week closure as another opportunity to do so.... Effective Friday November 13, 2020 the studio will physically close and move our dance class programming online until November 27th, as mandated by the government. Please watch your email for more detailed information regarding how to access your dancer’s class through Zoom. Movement, community & connection are more important right now than ever. We hope you will join us as we work hard to keep your dancers moving & active during this time. We can't express how grateful we are for your unwavering support. Mahogany Dance Arts is committed to providing professional, progressive, nurturing programs whether within a physically distanced studio environment or online programming. Together we will get through this as there is no other way! See more
