Mahone Bay Museum 02.12.2020

Alice Hagen was a Nova Scotian artist born in Halifax who lived, taught, and sold her art in Mahone Bay from 1931 to 1972. This video features over 90 photographs of Alice's artwork from various organizations and private collections. Thank you to everyone who contributed photographs to this project, including the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, MSVU Art Gallery, DesBrisay Museum, and Nova Scotia Museum.

Here's another locally made item from our gift shop by artist LEO, also known as Linda Oickle. These are hand printed linocuts (which were carved by hand). They are matted to be 18.25 inches long and 10.25 inches tall. We only have these two copies currently available: one black matt and one white. They are $45 each and Linda actually donated all the proceeds for these to the Museum! Comment below or message us if you would like to pick one up curbside by appointment at the Museum or if you would like us to check the additional mailing cost to send it to you. They are wrapped in plastic for extra protection and easy disinfecting.

Do you have an Alice Hagen piece? We are currently working on a video featuring photographs of art by Alice Hagen, who lived and taught pottery and ceramic painting in Mahone Bay. The video includes photos from our own collection as well as photos from other organizations' collections. However, we know that many pieces of her art are in private collections. If you or someone you know has a painting or ceramic item signed A. Hagen or A. Egan that you would like to share with u...s for this project, take a few photos of it with a neutral backdrop (preferably black or white or a solid colour) and email it to us at [email protected] by Nov. 12th and your photo may be featured in our video as a piece "from a private collection"! We can't wait to share the history of Alice Hagen with you! We've prepared a biography about Alice with the help of her descendants and have included over 60 photos so far. If you would like to donate to help us cover the cost of our Manager and Curator's time working on this Alice Hagen oral history project, you can e-transfer to [email protected] with "Alice Hagen video" in the message or visit https://mahonebaymuseum.com/p/donation-oral-history-videos/

Some days are more stressful than others. Today, Lyne is VERY carefully removing an accession number sewn into a textile artifact that's over 100 years old! During our collections audit, Lyne noticed this textile had two accession numbers on it so she's removing one! That's why it's always important to find the balance between putting an accession number on an artifact where it won't be seen by visitors when it's on display and putting an accession number where it can be EASILY found by staff! Otherwise you end up with two accession numbers on one item because staff couldn't find the first accession number!
