Congrats to all those involved in this volunteer led community project! MBC was happy to support the project by providing environmental assessment and monitoring as required. Cant wait to see the final product! https://www.facebook.com/442089302475776/posts/4803450063006323/
Some of our 2020 sea lice data showing up in presentations as far away as Scotland. https://youtu.be/Sr0vWG9sveM
Three interesting images from the 2020 Clayoquot Sound sea lice monitoring report. Once again over 90% of chum sampled were infested with 2 or fewer lice.
Our Clayoquot Sound Wild Juvenile Salmon Monitoring report for 2020 is finally online here: https://www.cermaq.com//Clayoquot+Wild+Juvenile+Salmonid+M Just in time for some weekend reading!
Great opportunity for young people interested in a career in environmental protection. I hope the moose ears are a required part of the uniform :) #science #workoutdoors
Broughton Archipelago wild juvenile salmon report is now available online here for your long weekend reading! https://corpsite.azureedge.net//Broughton-Wild-Juvenile-Sa A couple summary tables are attached showing the change or lack of change since 2016 as well as several sites in an area of the archipelago that are a hot topic right now compared to other areas we sample all over the BC southern coast. Great to see all our staffs hard work available for everyone to see and read!
European Green Crabs are one of the species we routinely document while doing our juvenile salmon beach seine sampling. This invasive species has the potential to impact our local species and habitats so keep your eyes open for them when out on the water. Apparently they are good eating but you require a permit from DFO to harvest this species. If you do see one, DFO asks you to take a photo, record the identifying features, note the location (with GPS coordinates if you can) and report it to their aquatic invasive species group. [email protected]. Good luck to the Coastal Restoration Society as they work with local First Nations to control this species on the west coast of Vancouver Island. We were happy to share our data with them as they were planning this program. https://www.westerlynews.ca//invasive-green-crabs-spark-/#
Nothing like starting your work week with a 7.5 hour crew boat run. Well done Nigel and Emma. Now they just have to get all the work done and make the return trip at the end of the week. Easy enough......
Our Esperanza Inlet wild juvenile salmon monitoring report is now available here: https://www.griegseafoodcanada.com//Esperanza-Wild-Juvenil Another area with over 90% of chum with 2 or less lice. More areas to follow...
Part of what we do is monitor the ocean floor around aquaculture sites. Heres 60 seconds of what we captured with one of our ROVs on a recent survey. This video starts at the edge of the site and covers approximately 12 m of ocean floor outwards from the site. The complete survey goes out to a point 152 m from the containment sytem and is about 15 min long. #aquaculture #rov
Pre fish farm and post fish farm chum in Discovery Islands, BC. Almost 95% of chum with 2 or less lice regardless of area. #aquaculture Lots of data in this report including yearly comparisons from 2016 through 2020 in Appendix IV
Our 2020 Discovery Island area wild juvenile salmon monitoring report can be found here https://t.co/J48LG1v2JB #aquaculture
Great piece of data from the 2020 Quatsino Sound sea lice monitoring. Site 3 (third row) coho with 89% infestation with 13.6 lice each and all pre-farm background (approx 30km from nearest far). @CTVNewsVI @CTVNews @GlobalBC #aquaculture https://t.co/WCz3hdp1la
First of our 2020 juv salmon reports is online here https://t.co/mgPPTP7zq3 Quatsino Sound has 36% of chum infested with 2 lice/fish. Table 7 has site break down with pre-farm Sites 2 & 3 having 27% & 34% infestation , 1.8 & 2.1 lice per/fish. @CTVNewsVI @CTVNews @GlobalBC.
20 Year Anniversary Celebration - Post #1 This post is to celebrate our very first client, way back in September of 2000. After several months of cold calling potential clients, Monica spotted an ad in the local newspaper looking for someone to complete a fish and fish habitat assessment of Coho Creek (a tributary of Mohun Creek, just north of Campbell River). This ad had been posted by Karen Furber from the Campbell River Fish and Wildlife Association. The CRFWA had been ...monitoring fish populations in this stream and were interested in collecting information on potential habitat restoration projects to help restore numbers of coho and pink salmon in this system. It was a pretty thrilling day to get the call from Karen letting us know that we had been the successful applicant. This project was the beginning of a several years long relationship with the club working in the Mohun Creek watershed and we are so grateful for this project that started it all. Also grateful to the hard working volunteers that have spent many hours working in the background to protect our local fish and wildlife resources over the years. See more
5am leave to beat a touch of weather (hopefully) on the Carpe Diems return to CR.
Beauty of a day to finish up our wild juvenile sampling for 2020. #Aquaculture #science
Its been a crazy spring to say the least and another successful wild juvenile salmon monitoring season is winding down. As one of our whalers gets some much needed TLC, Jinks the office dog guards the net.
Tomorrows start point for one crew. The other crew is on the west coast.
My kid drug me up here. Feeling old and heavy.
And just for a change heres something different. An MBC evening, after 232 km of travel in the whaler today.
Another MBC morning
For sale now... MBC 20th anniversary Lance figurines..... Very limited supply!
Sometimes just "regular" shoreline is stunning where we work.
And now for something completely different....but still fishy :) https://youtu.be/I8-EXMxufG8
Just a shot of the morning
Check out this cool critter who we often catch in our beach seine nets. The Discovery Passage Aquarium is putting out these short videos weekly, with fun activities for the small people in your life. Or maybe the big people who are looking for something to do while staying safe at home.
Always nice when its calm enough to side tow to your overnight spot!
Just another day
That there folks is the entrance to Stewardson Inlet. Must be one cool place! Nothing. But 80s hair rock allowed in there I bet.
Using the lab to brew up a batch of hand sanitizer and sanitizer spray for the crew and friends. Also working as a homeschool science / math lesson. Stay safe everyone! #thingsyoudoduringapandemic
Taking some time with the kid!
Within 25 min of finishing work on the mid-coast my super boss Monica Stewardson had a plane there to take me home. To top it off it was a goose which I have never flown on! #bestbossever #alsonotabadwife
Today were towing our boat into this big boat so we can work tomorrow. Busy busy
Early morning move from the west coast to the east coast. Busy busy! #westcoastbestcoast #aquaculture
