Our on-going effort to provide masks and soap to the schools around us. Keep safe young people. Thank you Rabson for coordinating this roll out. Thank you to all who have donated so this could happen.

We got some sad news from Sr Lontia from St Vincent School in Monze. There was a power outage yesterday. Then the power came on suddenly and at a high voltage in the middle of the night. It set fire to their chick incubators. The incubators, over 1000 eggs and 200 hundred chicks were burnt. Sr Lontia says she is devastated. The eggs and chickens were a reliable income-generating project. The income from the sales has helped to stabilize the school's finances.... We're hoping we can help the school replace what was lost. For now, we send our sympathies to the school staff and students. It’s harvest time in Zambia and we have a lot to be grateful for. The rainy season was good and so now people can enjoy a healthy harvest. Like many people in rural Zambia, our volunteer Rabson has a job as well as a side gig as a farmer. Here are some of his crops. Looking good! Yes just over a year ago, life in the communities we support was looking very grim indeed. In January 2020, southern Africa was in the midst of a devastating drought. We were distributing bags of m...aize to feed our vulnerable seniors. And since then, we’ve planted hundreds of tree seedlings, distributed thousands of masks and soap, and provided materials and fees for students. But it's thanks to you, our generous cheerleaders and donors, that many people in our communities have lived to see a good year. We’re so grateful to you all. Radios and cell phones help people in far-flung villages stay connected to the larger community. Lights help with night-time security and give students more time for studying. Many of our elders live with their school-aged grandchildren. Here are the kind of solar kits that we'd like for the elders of our communities -- panels, powerbank, lights. To start, we'd like to donate solar kits to 14 elders (11 women, 3 men). We estimate the full cost, including installation, will be... $150 USD per kit. We'd like to donate solar power packs to our old friends, Miriam Simuumba and Beatrice Moonga. Both of these women have put their children and sometimes their grandchildren through school. Beatrice is a wise and generous woman. She started a support group for people with HIV / AIDS and acted as a counsellor.Miriam brought up eight children and numerous grandchildren. My mother can remember Miriam as a young girl. In the 1940s and 1950s, my grandmother had an embroidery group... with Miriam and other women on the farm. And then in the 1990s, Miriam was part of the Malambo Women's Club of embroiderers. Here's a tea cosy Miriam made many many years ago. We want to give power to the elders! We're looking into installing solar panels, power banks, and lights for some of the retired people in our communities. Our old friend Hilda is on our wish list. Hilda took care of me when I was a baby, so she is close to my heart. She also cared for my Granny in her final years, and then worked with my aunt in the clinic. She's a lovely, caring woman.... Here's a photo of her from last year, receiving soap. And here are some photos of her from when we visited her home in 2017. Hilda has bad legs, so she uses a walker. Our sister organization, Mwabuka Stitchting and the Renewable-Energy-for-Everyone team have successfully installed solar panels for 50 people already, on a microloan basis. We would like to donate solar packs to retirees who can't afford to pay back a loan. We're researching ways to bring sustainable energy sources to rural areas in Zambia. Here are some solar panels installed by another group working in Zambia. We'd like to install solar panels like these where they are most needed, in the villages that we support. Only 5% of rural Zambians have access to electricity. Most villagers must use wood and coal to cook their food. Not only are their forests are disappearing, but the health of many suffers from indoor smoke pollution.... We'll post more, as we learn more about solutions. To donate: https://www.malambograssroots.ca/contact-us/
