One of the things that stands out about Muhammad Ali as a champion was the way that he fought battles inside and outside of the ring. So it should be no surpris...e to anyone that, when Ali heard of a man ready to jump off a building a few blocks away, he did not hesitate. Cre: The Modern Martial Artist See more

#OnThisDay September 19, 1980 Terry becomes the youngest Companion of the Order of Canada in a special ceremony in his hometown of Port Coquitlam, BC. Accompa...nied by his mom Betty, dad Rolly, brothers Fred and Darrell, sister Judi, grandmother Mary Wark and best friend, Doug Alward, he receives the award from Governor-General Ed Schreyer. The citation reads, By his disregard for his own pain and his devotion to a great cause, Terry embodies the motto of the Order of Canada: they deserve a better country. Always humble, Terry says the award is a great honour but that he is even more excited by the fundraising Canadians have done since he was forced to stop. The Marathon of Hope has now raised $12 million.

"Even though I'm not running anymore, we still have to try to find a cure for cancer. Other people should go ahead and try to do their own thing now." When Terr...y asked his best friend Doug Alward to take him to the hospital on September 1st, he never imagined he would not finish his Marathon of Hope. When that realization set in, Terry looked to Canadians to take his dream over that finish line. For the past 39 years, the second Sunday after Labour Day has been our amazing day to commemorate Terry’s effort and support our mission of finding a cure for cancer, in communities big and small. But in 2020, we all have to do our own thing, find our inner try. Whether it’s getting up to run or walk at 4:30am because that was Terry’s favourite time of day, or arranging for your house league teammates to FaceTime your way through a mid-day walk, make a call and make it happen. Whatever it is, it will be enough for Terry. And don’t forget to share your day your way - with us on social media. Tag @terryfoxfoundation and use the hashtag #TryLikeTerry

In honour of the very first Terry Fox Run, which took place 39 years ago today, Google is celebrating Terry as their Google Doodle image in Canada, U.S. and man...y other countries around the world. The Doodle, illustrated by Toronto-based artist Lynn Scurfield, replaces the usual Google logo with an image of Terry running in a valley near a lake. #ThanksGoogle for paying tribute not only to Terry but also to the millions of people around the world who have adopted his dream of finding a cure for all cancers as their own. We welcome you to support the 40th Terry Fox Virtual Run on Sunday September 20th by fundraising or donating at terryfox.org

Kenyan runner Abel Mutai was just a few feet from the finish line, but became confused with the signage and stopped, thinking he had completed the race. A Spani...sh runner, Ivan Fernandez, was right behind him and, realizing what was happening, started shouting at the Kenyan to continue running. Mutai didn't know Spanish and didn't understand. Realizing what was taking place, Fernandez pushed Mutai to victory. A journalist asked Ivan, "Why did you do that?" Ivan replied, "My dream is that someday we can have a kind of community life where we push and help each other to win." The journalist insisted "But why did you let the Kenyan win?" Ivan replied, "I didn't let him win, he was going to win. The race was his." The journalist insisted, and again asked, "But you could have won!" Ivan looked at him and replied, "But what would be the merit of my victory? What would be the honor in that medal? What would my Mother think of that?" Values are passed on from generation to generation. What values are we teaching our children? Let us not teach our kids the wrong ways and means to WIN. Instead, let us pass on the beauty and humanity of a helping hand. Because honesty and ethics are WINNING! #Ethics #Honesty #passitdown #teachlove

'If there's one story that sums Ali up, it's this one: California doesn't like boxing. For years the game was banned there, and when Ali was having his slight d...isagreement with the United States government over the question of being drafted in Vietnam, one of his bitterest opponents was Ronald Reagan, the one-time film star who was then Governor of California. Reagan's dislike of Ali was something he'd never bothered to conceal. But when Ali was training for a fight in Dublin a youngster broke through the watching crowd and asked Ali for an autograph. The answer, when Ali enquired his name was: Michael Reagan. The boy admitted that Ronald Reagan was his father, and charmed Ali with a Black Power salute, in fun of course. Ali loved it. One thing Ali hated was being introduced to any of his opponents' children before the fight. And if he knew, after a fight, that any children had been there to see the way he'd battered their father, he'd try and have a few words with them.' - Sir Henry Cooper

'People outside of the boxing fraternity do not realise what complexity is involved in throwing just one single punch. You don't punch from the arm or even the... shoulder. You punch from the foot. The wave of movement travels from the toe, through the foot, knee, hip and chest, sears up the arm, forearm, wrist and finally into the knuckles. Then the index knuckle and middle knuckle are the two which need to connect. These two knuckles flow from a direct line straight up your arm. The other knuckles don't have the same support, so if you connect badly with the other two you are likely to hurt your hand. Sometimes you connect correctly with the two correct knuckles and that is the perfect punch. When that happens they just go. Lights out - good night Charlie. If that is done correctly, which is hard enough, you then have to complete the procedure, which involves getting your fist back into the correct position by your chin, your body is pulled back into form and you are ready to go again. If you can do that meticulously, you will have probably taken two or three years to master it - and now you know just one punch.' - Chris Eubank
