Hartmann thinks the utter void of knowledge about the breast is downright astonishing, especially given its role as one of humankind’s most essential organs. T...he energy output in lactating breasts is about 30 percent of a mother’s resting energy in total. That’s more than the brain. That’s more than the heart! he exclaimed. Anything in the body that consumes 30 percent of its energy has, evolutionary-wise, got to be incredibly important for survival. http://www.huffingtonpost.com//there-are-no-tests-the-st_b

When we talk about why breastfeeding is good, we tend to concentrate on why it is good for the baby. Too often we forget why breastfeeding is also good for the... mother. There is good evidence that breastfeeding helps to protect the mother against certain cancers, type two diabetes and cardiac disease. Breastfeeding will not prevent breast cancer in every woman obviously, but it does reduce the risk. The attached graph shows how the longer a woman breastfeeds, the more her risk of breast cancer decreases. The following paragraph is an abstract of an article by experts published in Cancer Epidemiology in December 2015. Here is a link for the whole article https://www.dropbox.com//Cancer%20Epidemiology%202015%2C%2 "Breast cancer is the most frequent cancer in women, and incidence rates have been rising in European Union (EU) countries over recent decades due in part to a sharp decline in breastfeeding practices. Evidence for a protective association between breastfeeding and the risk of breast cancer at all ages is convincing and modest protective relationships between breastfeeding and the risk of endometrial and ovarian cancers have been suggested. The reduction in breast cancer risk is estimated at 2% for an increase of 5 months of lifetime breastfeeding. The longer women breastfeed, the more they are protected against breast cancer. In addition, breastfeeding is associated with several health benefits for both the mother and the breastfed child. Taking all this evidence into account, the 4th edition of the European Code against Cancer recommends: ‘‘Breastfeeding reduces the mother’s cancer risk. If you can, breastfeed your baby’’.
