People often ask me, "How do you get your students to practice?" The amazing fact is that all of my students enjoy playing the practice and more often than not, they tend to practice more than I require them to in a week. The key is self-motivation. If you can encourage a student to become self-motivated, half the battle is won. This can be done in a variety of ways, such as by including a piece that they love in their repertoire, or by showing them the value in the skills t...hat they are learning. As a student, once I had decided on the goal of achieving my A.R.C.T., I gradually become more determined and therefore more motivated to practice. Self-motivation may not always be possible, and in those cases, I advise creating something like an achievement chart that ends with a prize that the child really wants to get. Anyways, this piece by Jon Schmidt was apparently inspired by a tuna fish commercial, which seems hilarious but also somewhat inspirational as a whole. It's been a busy few weeks, getting materials prepared and students started. Nonetheless, as busy as I have been, I would love to be even busier!
