Manitoba Great Pyrenees Rescue 30.06.2021

7. Rehabilitation can be a series of trial and error but it also includes oodles and oodles of praise for effort and progress. Sometimes Phelps just needed some hug therapy. Phelps has an incredibly strong will. Even after we took the tapes and elastic bindings off and he was tired, he’s find the strength to keep going! Each day Phelps gets stronger and his gait has gone from a stiff legged waddle to a natural frontward stride. He has made incredible progress over the past two weeks and we are all so proud of him Stay tuned for the next step of Phelps’s therapy ... time to get our Swimmer swimming!!

6. Therapy should be Fun! Play therapy is helpful for Phelps. Encouraging him climb up dirt hills, and over piled up pillows and blankets. Teaching him how to hang onto toys and sticks with his paws, and playing tug a war forced him to bear down and pull. Even adjusting the placement of front legs and paws when he lied down helped train his brain to keep them together. Walking up and down stairs without the tapes or bands helped Phelps build upper body strength. Of course having furry friends to demonstrate that, really motivated Phelps to try! There were many failed attempts and a few faceplants but he just kept trying.

5. Motivation is Everything! Phelps mastered the walking track quickly and with the inspiration of his two foster friends he started to enjoy the track walks... as long as they included some chewing of the finish line and a little wrestle afterwards

4. Progress Feels Great! After only 5 days of daily rehabilitation therapy we saw all the hope we needed to know that our little Champion would walk! Phelps has incredible determination and once we gave him a mechanism to walk, there was no stopping him!!!

3. Time to Get On Track! We learned that Allison, from Muddy Water Bulldogs, has helped to rehabilitate many bull dog puppies that are born with Swimmer Syndrome and she suggested that we build Phelps a walking track. The track forces the front legs together to not only hold Phelps up but enable him to walk without his legs splaying outward. So we built the box and started track walking therapy for 10 minutes, every hour.

2. Time for Rehabilitation... try try again In the beginning, Phelps’ foster family used a binding tape technique to keep his legs from splaying and a cloth sling to lift the majority of his weight. The tape helped to train his brain to keep his legs together. Both of these assists allowed Phelps to be mobile for the first time and he was excited to MOVE!

Many people have been creating shelters for feral/stray cats just like these ones pictured. If this pertains to you, please keep these points in mind. Make sure the entry way is several inches above ground level to keep out rain and snow Insulate the shelter with straw to repel moisture. Do not use hay, or things like blankets and towelsthey soak up moisture like a sponge and make the shelter wet and cold Important to maintain the shelter, keeping the entrance free of snow and/or ice

Congratulations Axel!! We are excited to announce that Axel is HOME! There were so many applications for this handsome boy, and we finally found one that had everything that he needed! We knew he required a fenced yard, at least one fur sibling and a family with large breed experience. Check, check and check! Axel doing great here. We haven’t changed his name we like it. He is loving it here with his (new) brother Rex, we also found a cat and rescued it and he loves to c...uddle with her. We love having him here. He’s such a great part of the family and everyone loves him. Rex is 1 and half and Athena 5 months so Axel is really loving being a big brother. Previous to his adoption, Axel felt that he needed to spend the majority of his waking hours (and plenty of his napping ones) outdoors ‘guarding’. He has now found the perks of indoors, namely napping on the bed with his fur sibs! Big hugs to you Axel...enjoy! And thank you Elizabeth, we hope he continues to bring you all joy for many, many years to come See more

Congratulations Mitts!! It’s almost bittersweet to announce Mitts’ adoption. Mitts is our last Winter Litter puppy to be officially announced. But we are thrilled to know that she now has a great family that adores her! It’s hard to wallow in the fact that all the pups have moved on when you see how they are growing, learning and being enjoyed in their new homes. Mitts continues to warm our hearts this winter. She is a very intelligent, curious and an extremely active p...uppy. Already house trained and started her leash training. Very soon she will be going to doggy daycare twice a week to burn off some of that energy and socialize with other dogs. We kept her name but she's already got 2 nicknames: Mitzi and Nipsy (our guys love rap music so that one pays homage to a rap artist no longer with us). Mitts is keeping us busy! Thanks for rescuing the puppies! It’s our pleasure! Thank you Wyke family for choosing to adopt a rescue pup! See more

Just because there’s an age gap of 11 years, doesn’t mean they can’t be BFFs. George (previously Mukluk) was adopted from us in February of this year. Dakota is also an alumni, but was adopted many years before this youngster showed up. And there is beauty in the relationship they share George would also like to have this kinship with the family’s cats but the cats are not having any of that. Show us your darling duos!

Every one of these names, is helping Addie get the medical care that she requires. These are the people who participated (and were the highest bidders) in our December online auction. Thank you! And to those who bid and may have been outbid, your participation is also valued, thank you. Addie’s medical bills are already over $1000 and she hasn’t even had her Heartworm treatment, amputation or spay. It’s fundraisers like this auction that make helping her possible. We wish it... were possible for her to thank you herself. Addie would love that, she has such a sweet soul. Thank you to our fundraising team who worked tirelessly to make this work. And tweaked it, so it worked even better. Abigail, Debra, & Keely ...and Genia, who is working OT to make sure all the items get to their new owners! We look forward to doing this all again in February 2021! We may let our team hibernate until then. See more

Our rescue may not always look full but trust us, there are plenty of hungry mouths to feed everyday! With our soon to be available, ‘adoption pending’, palliative fosters, etc all needing their bellies to be filled, we are super grateful for food donations. Thank you to Courtney and the thoughtful folks of Best West Pet Supplies in Steinbach for their recent donation.

Lately we have been seeing an increased number of FIV positive cats. Thankfully, being tested positive for FIV is no longer a death sentence. And before you ask, yes it used to be that when cats tested positive for FIV they were often euthanized. Although there is still no cure. We now know that the cats can live long and happy lives WITHOUT infecting another cat. (Precautions are still taken by only adopting a FIV positive cat into a home that either already has FIV cats or no current cats) If you are interested in one of our FIV positive cats, we have lowered their adoption fee to reflect their need for a special placement. Rufus, Tibbs & Sable are all currently available. http://mgpr.weebly.com/cat-adoption-application.html

There is a definite shyness about Shimmer. Sudden noises, new people, unfamiliar dogs make her nervous. But there is something so special about her when she settles in. When Shimmer grows comfortable with people, kids, etc there is a glow about her. Shimmer will need a patient owner that can teach her that the world may be loud and unpredictable but that she is safe within it. Being a Pyrenees, Shimmer has some very clear traits of the breed, barking at her own reflection & r...ebel leaves is one and offering her paw as a reminder to pet her, is another. Shimmer will require a fenced yard. Birthdate: November 6th, 2019 Breed: Pyrenees mix Gender: female Activity Level: medium Size: currently 55 lbs Dogs: yes Cats: yes Kids: yes Adoption Fee: $300 If you would like to be considered to adopt Shimmer, please apply here: http://mgpr.weebly.com/

Congratulations Ceres & Chiron!! It’s TWOS-day and we are fortunate to have another double adoption to announce!! Ceres & Chiron are super cute kitten sister & brother, who came into rescue with their two other siblings. As these two were being fostered together, awaiting their day to be posted, their foster Bronwyn fell in love. With both! Looking at the duo of fluff, it’s not exactly hard to imagine why or how... settling in fantastically! I changed Ceres name to Bell...ona. Chiron is still Chiron. Bellona is a very affectionate and playful boy. He likes to play hide and seek with me and its a super cuddler! Sometimes plays a little too rough with his little sister, he is also twice her size. Chiron is shy but super spunky when she gets little jolts of energy in the morning and night time. She loves to play with shadows and roll around in the blankets and drapes. They are both very floppy kittens that love to be picked up. They roll around and toss about in the sheets and in carpets and boxes. They both love sleeping together and with people. They are so curious about our adult cat. Constantly trying to approach her and play. (She’s a queen, so it will take some time for her to like them, she tolerates them in her kingdom for now) And hopefully a happily ever after for this little prince & princess See more

Those of us with Pyrenees know that the ‘cuddle hint’ is a large paw that usually leaves a mark. Other dogs find various ways to keep us entertained. And we could all use a bit of a distraction nowadays. Tell us something your dog does that makes you smile every time they do it.

Congratulations Hollywood! We felt like Goldilocks as we went through all of Hollywood’s applications. And there were plenty! (Thank you to everyone who offered her a loving home ) Lots of wonderful applicants, but sometimes it’s the smallest thing that makes it not ‘just right’. We always say it has to be right for the dog...and the family. Sometimes it takes a stack of applications to find the perfect porridge...family, we mean family. Leigh & Jennifer’s home felt lik...e Hollywood’s home, right from the get go. Holly- now Ruby has pretty much from day one just fit right in. Her and Indica cannot get enough of each other- where one goes the other follows. They are so happy and adorable together. Since she’s come to live with us- Indica is a lot more confident, bouncy and happy. Ruby gets along with everyone. She wasn’t so sure of the baby at first- after only a tiny bit decided she adores him- she’s so gentle around him. Her and my nine year old crash around the house playing when he’s not at school. Leigh mentioned to me that he didn’t realize how much he missed being a dog’s person until her first night here. He loves taking her for walks and car rides. He loves that she jumps up on him when he gets home from work Her second day with us- Leigh took her across the street to the pet store to get her fitted with her own harness, new leash, toys and treats. Leigh plans on outfitting her in complete Jets gear. The only off day we had was when Indica went for a dental- Ruby was kinda mopey and overly quiet. I think Ruby and Indica bring out the best in each other. She’s perfect. We love her. We love her sooooo much- I can’t imagine us not having her. We love a fairytale ending See more

We are grateful that someone scooped this pretty girl out of a chilly ditch before she froze! It takes Scrunchie a bit of time to warm up to new environments. Once she assesses that ‘all is good’ though, she transforms into the sweetest snuggle bug. Scrunchie still jumps at loud noises or sudden movements, so she currently is best suited for a calmer home. She has been introduced to cat savvy dogs and has done okay, her foster feels like Scrunchie will warm to them as well. ...Age: June 22, 2020 Type: DMH Calico Gender: Female Adoption fee: $150 (with microchip) If you're interested in adopting Scrunchie, please apply here... http://mgpr.weebly.com/cat-adoption-application.html
