MPA HALL OF FAME Congratulations to Brock Haywood who is the 2019 MPA Hall of Fame Inductee! Do you even powerlift in Manitoba if you don’t know Brock? He’s an integral part of the development and continued strength of the powerlifting community in our province and we are so grateful for everything he’s done for our favourite sport.... Brock competed for the first time in 1987. He became a national ref at the 1993 CPU Nationals, which was the first Nationals that combined all of the age divisions and the Benchpress Championships at one event. For the next twenty years, Brock was the sole CPU National level Referee (or higher) in the province. Brock served as MPA VP for many years through the nineties up to about 2007. At that point Brock assumed the role of MPA President when the incumbent resigned. From that time until 2017 Brock was the MPA President until the next generation took the reins. Brock served as both the MPA VP and the CPU VP for nine of those years. For many years, Brock was the MPA Provincial Team Coach (not an official position then). He stepped onto the International Coaching stage when in 1992 he fulfilled the duties of the Assistant CPU Open World Team Coach. Then in 1993 and 1994 Brock was the CPU Open World Team Coach at the IPF Open World Championships in Sweden and South Africa. He also implemented the CPU Coaching Certification Course and has been part of the CPU Coaching Committee since and is the designated instructor for the province on Manitoba. Nice 575# PR from @caitken87! We can’t wait for the next meet either! Posted @withregram @caitken87 Thanks @acafa_caasa for giving me something to work on this past month. Crushed my old PR of 518 last week and it felt so good my coach @ncorrigal_sws and I thought we should push for 575. Last week 545 moved easy, this week 575 moved well! Looking forward to the next @manitobapowerlifting meet so I can move 600!

Meet Alyssa Amanda Burg, our Social Media Manager! She’s been in this role for two years and is responsible for creating and posting social media content on Facebook, Instagram, and the MPA website. Alyssa Amanda is not only a powerlifter a sport she’s been training in for seven years but is also a powerlifting coach and certified CPU National Referee. So, if you don’t see her on the platform or coaching an athlete, you may see her refereeing your next meet! Her favourite... thing about working with the MPA in her various capacities is that it allows her the ability to give back to the sport she loves so much. Alyssa Amanda’s proudest powerlifting moment was during the 2017 CPU National Championships in Quebec. Not only was it her first national competition, but she won silver for her bench press. Outside of her work with the MPA, Alyssa Amanda works for the Winnipeg School Division, is a studying to be a Chartered Professional in Human Resources, and is a group fitness instructor. #mpa #manitobapowerliftingassociation #manitobapowerlifting #manitobafitness #winnipegfitness

Meet Jannelle Van Den Bosch, our Volunteer Chairperson! She’s been in this role since 2017 and responsible for keeping track of when everyone last volunteered in order to ensure that pre-requisites for competing at Regionals or Nationals are met. Jannelle says that she likes working with the MPA because it means she sees some of the same names pop up just about every meet. MPA is 100% volunteer run and requires a lot of work that isn’t obvious if you haven’t volunteered at m...eets or attended the AGM, she said. Jannelle has been powerlifting since 2012 when she started training for her first meet in 2013. She originally signed up as moral support for her boyfriend, Devin. I’m glad I didn’t wait until I was ‘ready’, she said. Normally she’d say winning her class at Westerns 2017 in Winnipeg with a bunch of provincial and personal records was her proudest powerlifting moment. But after taking a year and a half to make bodyweight squats pain-free and then patiently building to squat 125kg/275lbs again for the first time in two years at Nationals 2020, she’s found a new personal milestone. Outside of lifting, Jannelle works as an estimator and draftsperson for a fiberglass window manufacturer, supplying windows and doors across Canada and the US. Her advice for new lifters? Try out tempo squats, and instead of training around the pain, go see a professional to address the pain! #manitobapowerliftingassociation #manitobapowerlifting #manitobafitness #winnipegfitness

Meet Kurtis Tallaire, our Records Chairperson! Kurtis has been in this role for 3 years and is responsible for updating MPA records, printing and signing certificates, and getting those certificates out to all you record breakers! His favourite thing about working with the MPA is knowing that he’s contributing to an organization that he’s been a member of since 2013. He’s been a powerlifter for eight years and says that his proudest powerlifting moment was the 2015 CPU Nation...al Championships in St. John’s, Newfoundland where he says, I deadlifted a massive 60KG after missing my 45KG opener. Outside of lifting, Kurtis works at a gravel mine where he operates heavy machinery. His advice to new lifters? Don’t burn yourself out! #manitobapowerliftingassociation #manitobapowerlifting #manitobafitness #winnipegfitness
