The response to COVID pandemic in Scarborough’s for-profit long-term care homes has been appalling. Today I joined the protest at Tendercare against the handling of the outbreak at the home which has resulted in the deaths of 43 residents in our community. It’s unacceptable that for-profit long-term care shareholders across Ontario are getting payouts while seniors are dying and caregivers are stretched to the limit. I’m demanding that the City of Toronto and Minister of Lo...ng Term Care take immediate action. This means: 1. An immediate assessment of standards and operations for all private for-profit long-term care homes in Scarborough; 2. This assessment is to be undertaken by a team of doctors, health professionals and long-term care specialists, including City of Toronto public health staff, to recommend proactive interventions where necessary; 3. The Province must take full responsibility for the problems at Tendercare and all other long-term care homes, to ensure the same high standard of operations and accountability as the 10 City operated long-term care homes. Please read my full letter about the Tendercare crisis at mannawong.ca/tendercare COVID-19,43 10 mannawong.ca/tendercare
I'm honoured to receive endorsements from all five of my fellow Scarborough TDSB Trustees - Parthi Kandavel, Dr. Anu Sriskandarajah, David Smith, Zakir Patel and Yalini Rajakulasingam, Ward 21. I've worked with them closely at the School Board advocating for equity and accountability, and together we've stood up for Scarborough’s parents, students and families. Thank you for your support!
