In the Rituals of the last century, it was said that a Lodge required sev...en to make it perfect, but the only explanation to be found of the sacredness is the seven liberal arts and sciences, which according to the old Legend of the Craft were the foundation of Masonry. In modern ritual, the symbolism of the number seven has been transferred from the first to the second Degree, where it refers to the seven steps of the winding staircase, but the symbolic seven is to be found diffused in hundreds of ways over the whole Masonic system. In our Ritual, the ascent of the seven steps is symbolical of the seven liberal arts and sciences. But the seven steps have deeper meaning. They allude to the vibrations producing colour and sound. There are seven colours in the spectrum, of which three are called Primary. There are seven notes in the musical scale. Thus, it is said to be a harmonic number, three of which compose the principal chord of the key. The musical scale completely bears out the creative process of evolution. When the scale is played, we ascend to a higher scale, at a higher rate of vibration, and repeat (continue to do what has been done). Herein may be hidden the significance for the lecture urging a study of Music. The sun was the great central planet of the ancient seven, and is represented as the central light in the branched candlestick. The moon is second only to the sun in beauty and splendour, and on every seventh day the moon assumes a new phase. In the Hebrew, Syrian, Phoenician, Chaldaen and Saxon seven signifies full or complete and every seventh day after the first quarter the moon is complete in its change. FRIDAY THE 13TH. On October 13th, 1307, French king Philip IV the Fair ordered the mass arrest of Knights Templar in the Kingdom of France. That day fell on Fri...day 13th and some consider that the superstition about Friday 13th being an unlucky day stems from this very event. Jacques de Molay was the last Templar Grandmaster who was put to death by burning at the stake on March 18, 1314. His martyrdom against the forces of tyranny become a powerful symbol that many fraternal societies such as the Freemasons referenced in their ceremonies and literature. His final words were recorded as "SPES MEA IN DEO EST, which translates as My Hope Is In God, which was later adopted as a motto of the Scottish Rite. Brother Colour Sergeant Johnson Beharry VC, being interviewed on the BBC today for Armistice Day. He isn't hiding his light! He was awarded his Victoria Cross (...The British equivalent of the American Medal of Honour) for two separate acts of valour. On 1 May 2004, Bro Beharry was driving a Warrior Armoured Fighting Vehicle, called to the assistance of a foot patrol caught in a series of ambushes in Iraq. His vehicle was struck by several Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPGs), which knocked out his periscope, all Radios, His commander, Gunner, and other inside were injured. Bro Beharry drove his Warrior through the ambush with the drivers hatch wide open, leaving him exposed to gunfire and further RPGs. He led 5 other Warriors following him to safety. He then assisted in extracting the wounded from his vehicle. His citation stated that his actions on 1 May 2004 were "Valour of the highest order". but that wasn't all. On 20 June 2004, Bro Beharry was again driving his Warrior as lead vehicle in Al Amarah, Iraq, when it was attacked with RPGs. The first RPG round struck just 6 from his head causing him severe facial and head injuries. As before, further RPGs struck the vehicle, injuring his Commander and crew. Despite his injuries, he drove the vehicle out of the ambush and to safety, whereupon he fell unconscious. He was still recovering from his wounds in March 2005, when HM Queen Elizabeth II awarded him the VC.

TODAY IN MASONIC HISTORY (9/26/1872): The Shriners began with the first official meeting at Mecca Temple, now known as Mecca Shriners, in New York. Shriners ado...pted Turkish fezzes, name-dropped Muhammad, Allah, and Islam as part of their rituals. The reason being that Shriners back then wanted to project for themselves an image of being the playground of Masons, and that back in 1872, all things Middle-Eastern or pseudo-Arabic were deemed wildly "exotic" and "fun", far from the modern-day perception that such images now conjure. In fact, after the September 11 terror attack in New York, some Shrine branches have allegedly changed their names to get rid of any Islamic reference. However, though their main rituals still have Islamic elements, such were obviously used without any real intent of promoting or mocking Islam whatsoever. Such were merely injected from the very beginning in order to add an air of vague mysticism and therefore attract membership. Some Shriners believed that their organization can be traced to some ancient Persian crime-watch group, not realizing that, in actuality, their organization was merely set-up for the sake of "fun." In fact, the group’s lengthy name, "Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine" was chosen specifically to fill out the initials AAONMS that serve as an anagram for "A MASON." Despite the "fun" objective, Shriners International has now become the most charitable institution ever spawned in the entire history of organized Freemasonry, providing complete medical care to burned and crippled children wherever they are found.

Today, our very own Michael Sussman, M.D. received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Academy for Cerebral Palsy & Developmental Medicine (AACPDM)...! The recipient of this award is honored for making creative contributions of outstanding significance to the field of medicine and for the benefit of patients with cerebral palsy and other childhood-onset disabilities. Dr. Sussman joined the Portland Shriners Hospital team in 1992 and was instrumental in forming the clinical research department, dedicated to examining the efficacy of the treatments provided to patients. We want to congratulate Dr. Sussman on this impressive achievement this is truly an honor worth celebrating!
