Today is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. It has been over 30 years since the murder of 14 young women at Polytechnique Montréal (December 6, 1989). This act of violent misogyny shook our country and led Parliament to designate December 6 as The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. As we mourn their loss and remember their lives, we reaffirm our commitment to fight the hatred that led to this tragedy and the mi...sogyny that still exists today. The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women is about remembering those who have experienced gender-based violence and those who we have lost to it. It is also a time to take action. Achieving a Canada free from gender-based violence requires everyone living in this country to educate themselves and their families and communities on gender-based violence, centre the voices of survivors in our actions and speak up against harmful behaviours. It’s fun to decorate for the winter holidays, but holiday decorations can increase your risk for a home fire. As you deck the halls this season, be fire smart. For more information on how to prevent winter fires, visit usfa.fema.gov/prevention/ outreach/holiday.html and nfpa.org/winter.

As you deck the halls this holiday season, be fire smart. A small fire that spreads to a Christmas tree can grow large very quickly. PICKING THE TREE Choose a tree with fresh, green needles that do not fall off when touched.... PLACING THE TREE Before placing the tree in the stand, cut 2 from the base of the trunk. Make sure the tree is at least three feet away from any heat source, like fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents or lights. Make sure the tree is not blocking an exit. Add water to the tree stand. Be sure to add water daily. LIGHTING THE TREE Use lights that are listed by a qualified testing laboratory. Some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use. Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections. Read manufacturer’s instructions for number of light strands to connect. Never use lit candles to decorate the tree. Always turn off Christmas tree lights before leaving home or going to bed. For more information on how to prevent winter fires, visit nfpa.org/winter.

We want to share safety tips to help you Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety A continuous set of three loud beepsbeep, beep, beepmeans smoke or fire. Get out, call 9-1-1, and stay out. A single chirp every 30 or 60 seconds means the battery is low and must be changed.... All smoke alarms must be replaced after 10 years. Chirping that continues after the battery has been replaced means the alarm is at the end of its life and the unit must be replaced. Make sure your smoke and CO alarms meet the needs of all your family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities. See more
We want to encourage all residents to embrace the 2021 Fire Prevention Week theme. It’s important to learn the different sounds of smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. When an alarm makes noisea beeping sound or a chirping soundyou must take action! said Mike Dunn, Chief. Make sure everyone in the home understands the sounds of the alarms and knows how to respond. To learn the sounds of your specific smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, check the manufacturer’s instructions that came in the box, or search the brand and model online.
The Lake Cowichan Fire Department is fundraising to erect a building for a permanent display for the original #1 Engine. This building will be located at the cu...rrent Fire Hall location on North Shore Rd adjacent to the bus stop in the south corner of the east parking lot. The building will be enclosed by glass on 3 sides enabling viewing of the Engine as well as articles of firefighting history in the Lake Cowichan Area. It will be able to be viewed year round, 24 hours a day as it is a separate building from the Fire Hall. Engine #1 was purchased for the Lake Cowichan Fire Department in 1951 and served the community well until it was sold to Honeymoon Bay FD and used until 1990. The Engine then was sold and went over to the mainland in the Vancouver area. It had resurfaced in the early 2000’s and was purchased jointly by the Lake Cowichan Fire Department membership and Town of Lake Cowichan in 2007. We currently have raised about $44,000 of our $75,000 goal for the construction of the building and restoration of the truck. We are hoping that community members or groups would be interested in donating to our project. In kind donations of materials needed for this project would be gladly accepted in lieu of a cash donation. We will be able to work with the Town of Lake Cowichan to provide a tax receipt for any large donations made to this project. We will acknowledge donors to the project on our social media, recognition at the grand opening of the building as well as signage to be installed on the building. If you have any questions or need more information, please contact Fire Chief Doug Knott via our Facebook Messenger, email [email protected] or call the hall and leave a message at 250-749-3522. Pictured below is Engine #1 and the artists conception of the completed building to house it. Thank you for taking the time to read this post and consider our project as a worthwhile investment in the history of our community. Sincerely Membership of the Lake Cowichan Fire Department
