Marshmallow Challenge - A Sweet Challenge at Maple Hill: That snowstorm is wearing off, this brainstorm is kicking off. Maple Hill’s signature Super Wednesday event has come back! After a thorough discussion among the entire faculty, we finally decided to start this year’s first such event with something that would work on the student’s creative thinking and practice their communication skills The Marshmallow Challenge it is!... Blending in the knowledge of various science subjects, such as physics and mathematics, this fun activity also requires strong patience, creativity, leadership, and close team collaboration. Provided with the same amount of pasta noodles, string, tape, and one marshmallow, students were divided into 6 groups using their wits to make their pasta tower as high as possible. Apparently, 20 minutes seemed far from enough for our students to go through the whole process from discussion to execution, and all the way to completion. With a mixture of screaming, clamoring, and laughing, the judge, Principal Eric DiNozzi, announced the end of the game. Although each team worked hard to make their towers as tall as possible, the group under the supervision of our humanities teacher, Mr. Dominic Lee, emerged victorious with a tower measuring 44.5 cm from base to the top of the marshmallow.

From the Sea to the Sky: https://youtu.be/8UE2hHS5Ft0 Delighted, excited and even thrilled, students from Maple Hill School are setting off to their first field trip of 2019 to the Sea to Sky Gondola in Squamish, B.C.. Outfitted with thick snow boots and warm down jacket, our newcomers to Vancouver are geared up for this exotic adventure. Coincidentally or not, the sky even stays clear and sunny for us after several days of snow and gloomy weather in a row.... Students are arranged into five groups with a teacher leading each of the group. For most of our students, overlooking the gorgeousness of Mother Nature in a steadily raising Gondola is a first time experience. While holding tightly the railing of this moving cable car, they also strain to hear what the tour guide is introducing about the history of this historic scenic sight. Finally the peak! Our first destination is snowshoeing, a common type of Canadian outdoor activity that is almost completely new to all of our students from China. With the help of our warm-hearted tour guide, all the students have managed to complete a snow march of 50 meters with a trail of some noise and big laughter. The entire trip culminates in snow tubing, for sure! None of the students had tried this fun game before! It is so exciting; I keep asking the operator to spin the tube faster and harder! I enjoy the speed and the bump so much! said Kirk Sun, one of our Gr. 12 students, even though he lost his left shoe in his first endeavor

Classroom Decoration for Lunar New Year: What activity can be more enjoyable to do on Maple Hill’s Volunteering day than decorating classrooms to meet the coming Lunar Year of Pig? Grouped by their homerooms, students are provided with all kinds of materials and tools to draw on their talents and imagination. The group determined to have the best room from the judge (our principal Mr. Di Nozzi), is able to receive two extra volunteering hours on their record. ... While some calligraphers use Chinese characters to decorate the walls, other talented students prefer to make paper-cuts of Chinese red lanterns, hanging on the door frames. Nonetheless, what grabs the most attention of the entire faculty is an amazing piece of traditional Chinese painting of Panda, elaborated by Jamie Chen, who is particularly specializing in fine arts. Of course, thanks to her, she and her coworkers are rewarded 2 extra volunteering hours!

Maple Hill Volunteering 2018 Nov: Friday, November 23rd, 2018 our second Volunteering day was held at Maple Hill School. Students arrived early to enjoy a day of the workshop in the theme Volunteering to build an eco-friendly and friendly society. Through a series of thought-provoking videos, small group discussions, students and teachers were able to lay the foundations for an MHS Volunteering Program.... This program will enable students to participate in different activities that will help them nurture their interests, practice their skills, apply relevant knowledge and discover career pathways, all through selfless giving of time and energy to help build solidarity and social justice. Students showed enormous interest in participating in volunteering venues like Science World, the Vancouver Aquarium, The Vancouver Public Library, Cultural events, Food banks, etc. We embrace our students’ interests and soon will be putting together a comprehensive volunteering program.

Activity Day - Fly-Over Canada: All students from Maple Hill School participated in our activity day held November 22nd, 2018. First, we all took the Canda Line to Waterfront, and from there we made our way to Fly-Over-Canada, located at Canada Place. At the venue, students and staff enjoyed a full immersion 4-D Imax experience; a simulated flight over Canada, visiting all the beautiful landscapes and eye-opening urban settings Canada has to offer.... Later we enjoyed a shared lunch at a local food court, after which we visited the traditional Vancouver Christmas Market. At the market students and staff enjoyed cultural bathing in German-themed Christmas shopping and food tasting, an in spite of the cold and rain, students endured, shopped and took pictures of beautiful Christmas decorations and crafts. After a very tiring activity day we all decided it was time to go home, so we hopped back on the Canada Line back to our school from where everyone went home for a deserved rest.
