Make a New Year’s Resolution for your vision this year! The following tips can also improve your overall health so can be some easy additions to your resolution list for 2021. - Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet. Try incorporating more foods into your diet that are important for your eyes and are rich in vitamins C and E, zinc, omega-3 fatty acids, and lutein. These include leafy greens, citrus fruits, vegetable oils, nuts, whole grains and fish. - Stop sleeping in your conta...cts. Contacts are not meant to be slept in. While it may not seem like a big deal, sleeping in your contacts greatly increases your risk for eye infection or other more permanent damage. - Stare at your phone less. Try cutting down on the amount of time you spend looking at your phone or at least take a break every 20 minutes to let your eyes rest. Your eyes will thank you for it. - Wear your prescription glasses. Though it seems simple, many people forget or don’t want to wear their prescribed glasses. But eye strain can cause pain and discomfort, so please remember to wear your glasses. #healthyeyes #visionhealth #optometrist #newyear #2021 #mapleridge #newyearsresolutions #eyedoctor #mapleridgeeyecare

Our eyesight can be strained by too much or improper screen time and can lead to Computer Vision Syndrome. Symptoms can include stress headaches, blurred vision, fatigue, light sensitivity and teary eyes. Here are some simple ways you can try to improve your screen time. Use the nighttime setting. Most devices come with a blue light or night mode. This lowers the blue light output from your screen and is easier on the eye. This is especially important at night ...or in dim settings to cause less eye strain. Remember the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. Watch your distance. If you're too close to your screen, you are exposing your eyes to much more bright light than normal. If you're too far, you might be straining to see the characters on the screen. Maintain your routine eye exams. Computer Vision Syndrome symptoms might be less about your use of screens and more about underlying conditions or a change in your current prescription. #computervisionsyndrome #computervision #bluelight #eyestrain #digitaleyestrain #optometrist #eyedoctor #visionhealth See more

If you've seen something similar to this image in your vision, these are called floaters. They look like small, semi-transparent specks, "cobwebs" or squiggles that appear in your field of vision. While annoying, ordinary eye floaters and spots are very common and generally aren't cause for alarm. They are small particles of gel floating within the more liquid vitreous that become more noticeable when they fall within the line of sight. Floaters can occur more frequently and become more noticeable as you grow older. While common, if you do notice a sudden change in the number or size of floaters, they can be an indication of a more serious problem, such as retinal detachment or tear and would be a reason to contact our office immediately. #floaters #eyehealth #eyedoctor #optometrist #visionhealth

In some cases, it’s even more important to wear proper UV protection in cold weather than in the summer. UV rays are just as intense in winter months but UV light can also bounce off of wet and icy surfaces, producing a glare and doubling exposure to harmful UV rays. Winter UV exposure can also increase the risk of photokeratitis. More commonly known as snow blindness, this is a painful condition that is like having a sunburned eye: the outer layer of the cornea is infla...med or irritated from exposure to UV light. Symptoms include sensitivity to light, pain or burning in your eyes and blurred vision. Symptoms usually go away gradually in a day or two as your corneas recover so treatment is focused on making you feel better as your eyes heal. The easiest way to keep your eyes protected in winter is to wear a quality pair of sunglasses or protective ski goggles and to ensure that they block at least 99% of UV light. #winteruvprotection #snowblindness #photokeratitis #snowsafety #uvprotection #uvrays #eyedoctor #optometrist See more

Here's a fun optometric Throwback Thursday fact! The pince-nez shown here (literally meaning 'pinching the nose' in French) was a nineteenth century innovation that was popular from approximately 1840's to the 1920's. Although pince-nez were used in Europe since the late 14th century, "modern" ones like the one pictured here had a spring clip to keep the glasses in place under tension. Sounds uncomfortable! Glasses with arms had been introduced in the 1700's but the pinc...e-nez style gained popularity because of the stigma sometimes attached to the constant wearing of eyeglasses. These could easily be removed and were often connected to the wearer's clothing via a chain, cord or ribbon so that they would not get lost when taken off. Thankfully, eyeglass and frame technology has come a long way since then and wearers don't have to suffer from a pinched nose in order to see clearly! #glasseshistory #eyeglasses #optometrist #eyedoctor #funfact #learnsomethingnew #comfortableeyewear See more

This may be the year you want to take your Halloween costume to the next level. But before you jump in and purchase novelty cosmetic contact lenses, please make sure you know the potential risks. Contact lenses should only be purchased from a qualified, licensed eye care practitioner or you may be putting your eye health in danger. Many novelty lenses haven't received Health Canada approval and are brought into the country illegally. Those lenses may contain bacteria a...nd other contaminants or may be poorly made. Here are some of the potential side effects of wearing novelty contact lenses purchased from an unlicensed retailer: * Scratched cornea * Eye infection, such as pink eye * Corneal ulcer * Restricted vision * Permanent blindness So spread the word and skip the Halloween contact lenses. You can do wonders with Halloween makeup instead. #halloweencostume #halloween2020 #contactlenses #contactlenssafety #eyehealth #eyesafety #healthyvision #optometrist #eyedoctor See more

Taking proper care of your contact lenses can keep your eyes healthy and help you see better. The following are some healthy habits for safe contact lens wear: - Always wash your hands with soap and water and dry your hands well with a clean cloth before handling your lenses. - Properly clean your contact lenses with contact lens disinfecting solution recommended by your optometrist each time you remove them (never water or saliva). Use only fresh contact lens dis...infecting solution in your case and never mix fresh solution with old or used solution. - Keep your contact lens case clean by rubbing and rinsing it with contact lens solution, never water, and then empty and dry with a clean tissue. Store upside down with the caps off after each use. - Don’t sleep in your contact lenses unless prescribed by your optometrist. Sleeping while wearing contact lenses has been shown to increase the risk of an eye infection. - Keep your contact lenses away from all water. Remove your contact lenses before swimming and avoid showering in them. Water can introduce germs to the eyes through contact lenses. - Have a backup pair of glasses with your current prescription available in case you need to take out your contact lenses. - Remove your contact lenses immediately and call our office at 604-463-4469 if you have eye pain, discomfort, redness or blurred vision. Talk with one of our optometrists during your next appointment concerning your contact lens wear and care and to help prevent eye infections. They will recommend the right regimen and products for your optimum eye health. #contactlenses #contactlenssafety #healthyeyes #eyedoctor #optometrist #healthyeyehabits See more

Myopia is a very common visual condition that affects nearly 30% of Canadians. For someone with myopia (or nearsightedness), near objects may be seen clearly but distant objects are blurred. This condition often begins during childhood and in most cases, stabilizes in early adulthood. There are ways to reduce myopia, which can include the use of defocus spectacle lenses, mild atropine eye drops and now even customized contact lenses. Our optometrists are highly skilled in assessing and prescribing the right control treatments for optimal results. We often forget that children's eyes are more vulnerable to harmful UV rays than our own, as their eyes cannot filter UV light as effectively as an adult's. But prevention from UV exposure and damage can be easy: get your child a pair of sunglasses that filter both UVA and UVB light and make sure they wear them! The simplest way to ensure this is to have them help pick out their own pair of comfortable sunglasses in a style that they like. Set a good example by wearing ...your own sunglasses and make sure that sunglasses are part of your daily routine. Our optical staff are VERY happy (as you can see from Julian and Brenda here)! Our new UV cleaning machine has arrived! Previously, in order to keep our patients safe, any frame that had been touched would be cleaned by our staff by hand before it could be put back onto our frame boards. This new machine is a germicidal UV sterilization oven specifically designed to sterilize frames in minutes using UVC light. When UVC light is shined on bacteria, viruses and other pathogens, it deactivates their DNA as well as destroying their ability to multiply and ultimately killing them. If you’re planning a visit to our office for any reason, whether it's for an eye exam, glasses repair or to order eyewear, please call our office to book an appointment. We ask for your patience as we expect a large volume of calls. If we're unable to answer, please leave a message and we'll return your call as soon as possible. We thank you for your patience and support during this difficult time. Things will be different when you next visit our office but rest assured that the standard of care will be at the same high level it has always been. We look forward to serving you again soon! #optometrist #staysafe #newnormal #healthandsafety #mapleridgeeyecare #eyecare #safety #reopening #optometry See more

Vivian, one of our amazing optometric assistants, is ready with an infrared thermometer to take the temperature of anyone who visits our clinic. This is just one of the many new safety practices and protocols in place to keep our patients and staff healthy and safe. You'll see Vivian and our other staff behind sneeze guards at their workstations and wearing varying types of PPE, depending on their interactions with patients. Even with a face mask on though, you can see the welcoming smile in Vivian's eyes. She is looking forward to seeing our patients in the office once again. Some timely reassurance for contact lens wearers during the COVID-19 pandemic: yes, it is safe to continue to wear your contact lenses at this time. The Centre for Ocular Research & Education (CORE), at the University of Waterloo has released some important facts from prominent ocular scientists we wanted to share with our contact lens wearing patients: 1. You can keep wearing contact lenses, as there is no evidence that contact lens wearers are at higher risk of contrac...ting COVID-19 2. Good hygiene habits are critical - this means not just handwashing, but properly caring for your contact lenses too 3. Regular glasses do not provide protection from COVID-19: there is no scientific evidence to support this rumour 4. Keep unwashed hands away from your face, a recommendation that is consistent with those from the WHO (World Health Organization) and the CDC 5. If you are ill, temporarily stop wearing your contacts and use your glasses instead. Make sure to wear new contact lenses and use a new case once you are well again For more information, visit @coreuwaterloo #contactlenssafety #staysafeathome #contactlenses #eyehealth #washyourhands See more

Working from home, home-schooling and trying to stay in touch with friends and family during this time of self-isolation means that we're spending even more of our day on our computers and electronic devices. Here are some tips to keep your vision healthy while adjusting to the new norm of digital life: - Follow the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. - Blink often to refresh your eyes! Many people blink less than usual... when working at a computer, which can contribute to dry eyes. - Check the lighting and reduce glare - even try a protective anti-glare screen cover. Bright lighting and too much glare can strain your eyes and make it difficult to see objects on your monitor. - Position your screen about an arm’s length from your eyes and 15 to 20 degrees below eye level. - Adjust your screen settings. Enlarge the type for easier reading. Adjust the contrast and brightness to a level that's comfortable for you. And don't forget to take time away from your digital devices completely to give yourself a break. Keep your eyes (and yourself) healthy. #visionhealth #digitaleyehealth #digitallife #lifeathome #stayhome #staysafe #healthyeyes #optometrist #eyedoctor #mapleridgeeyecare See more

Dear Patients, please accept our sincere regrets that we are unable to care for you as we are accustomed to. Due to the lack of access, we would like to remind our contact lens wearing patients not to wear their contacts for exceedingly long hours or stretch them past their life span. Inflammation, infection and even corneal ulcers may result and we are unable to examine you face to face to take care of you as we normally would. To offset the lack of in-person care, we ...are now offering teleoptometry consults. Please call us at 604-463-4469 or email at [email protected] if you have any eye issues and we will contact you within the day. Keep your eyes (and yourself) safe! Your optometrists, Drs. Do you know what's causing the pain behind your eye?

Maple Ridge Eye Care 26.03.2019

The health and safety of our patients and employees is always our top priority and we have therefore put several new precautionary measures into effect in our clinic. We kindly ask that patients who are feeling ill or who have any of these symptoms: fever, coughing, shortness of breath, runny nose or sneezing, please reschedule your appointment until you have recovered. In our office, we have increased the frequency of sanitizing with disinfectant in high touch areas (do...or handles, chair arms, desktops) and are continuing to disinfect examination equipment between each patient. Our staff are following the prevention guidelines from the CDC regarding handwashing and hygiene and we are asking our staff to stay home if they feel ill. Despite the uncertainty COVID-19 is bringing to our daily lives, we will continue to monitor the situation and respond quickly in order update our preventative practices as needed. Thank you for your understanding as we strive to keep our patients and staff safe. #optometrist #mapleridgeeyecare #eyedoctor #eyehealth #covid19 #washyourhands #preventive #protect #eyeexam #shoplocalmapleridge See more
