#BCMuseumsWeek: Before the construction of Haney Bypass in the early 80s, the heritage buildings of Port Haney Brick & Tile were just down the hill from today's location. Note how close to the railway tracks they used to be! P02720 #mrmuseum #bcmuseums #bchistory #mapleridgebc

This year we may all be ordering our gifts delivery, but a busy December mail service is nothing new. This is Maple Ridge post office employee Wally Burrows trying to hold up falling stacks of mail during the Holiday rush in 1966! (P13578) #mapleridgebc #mrmuseum

This photo shows a woman on a hike in Golden Ears in 1925. She is in among a stand of "snow ghosts", trees that are wind swept and so covered with snow that no part of the tree is visible. P07977 #mrmuseum #mapleridgebc #winterwonderland

Fish weirs were once a common practice across BC until the Fisheries Act in 1878 when fish weirs and other Indigenous technologies were banned by the federal government as a result of being a perceived threat to the canning industry. In recent years, fish weirs have had a resurgence in First Nation communities since the practice is an excellent method to sustainably track and manage spawning salmon. While this salmon weir was located on the Cowichan River, a similar kind would have been used on the Alouette. Photo taken by Frederick Dally in 1867-70. This photo was taken by WB Piers in 1932, a day after a fire on River Road destroyed most of the commercial buildings. Fortunately, the Bank of Montreal (as seen here) was saved from the flames and still stands today as the Billy Miner Pub. (P01610) #mrmuseum #mapleridgebc #fire

This is the view of 224th street looking south from Dewdney Trunk Road in the early 1940's. Bruce's Country Market opened its doors in 1948. Since then it has been serving the Albion and Maple Ridge communities and remains a favourite local place to shop. We are beyond saddened to report the death of Sheila Nickols who for so long has been synonymous with the Maple Ridge Historical Society. She quite literally wrote the book on our community history, Maple Ridge: A History of Settlement. She has been the President of the society and our chief spokesperson, as well as being instrumental in the founding of the Maple Ridge Museum. Here is Sheila standing out in front of the museum back when it opened in 1984. Since that time ...she served as the museum curator, board president, director, volunteer, and mentor to all employees since. She will be dearly missed. In the absence of a memorial service due to COVID restrictions, if you have a favourite Sheila story, please send it to the museum along with a picture if possible and we will add your words to the story. Read more about Sheila and her contributions to the Museum, Historical Society, and community of Maple Ridge here http://ow.ly/eusn50Cjcb9

With the usual Remembrance Day events and activities canceled, we all look for other ways to remember those who served and those who made the ultimate sacrifice. On this November 11th, we "remember in place." The Legion is asking that people not gather at the Cenotaph as usual. This year there are other ways to safely honour those who have served. Join Legion 88 for their online commemoration at 10:45, find more information here http://ow.ly/2T4C50CfX2c Learn more about the ...local war effort here: http://ow.ly/bFpf50CfX2b #mrmuseum #mapleridge #mapleridgebc #remembranceday #lestweforget

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. Today, we remember those who served and those who did not see the end of the war. Pictured here is Sergeant Pilot Edward James Harris "Jim" shipping out from the Haney train station. Jim was killed during training exercises in Vulcan, Alberta in December of 1942 when he was only 20 years old. He is buried in the Maple Ridge Cemetery. This year we "remember in place."
