Winter Calf Tip #2: Providing ample amounts of clean, dry bedding will allow the calf to nest, trapping in their warmth and minimizing heat loss. Straw is a great choice for this. Dry bedding will also keep the calf clean and dry, helping the calf stay warmer. In addition, adequate bedding will help reduce the air’s ammonia levels, that could cause respiratory issues. This is particularly important in the winter time when ventilation is typically poorer. #StartedWithMapleview

Winter Calf Tip #1: Providing your calves with clean, dry, well fitting calf coats will protect the calf from wind, as well as helping with keeping them dry. A calf with a dry coat has the ability to insulate itself by trapping air between it’s hair fibres. When the hair is wet, this insulating property is lost. So by keeping them dry with a calf coat the hairs retain their insulating properties, as well as adding an extra layer of protection from the wind. Be sure to alway...s check the fit of your calf coats as the calf grows. Calf coats should also be washed as they become soiled, as well as when using them on a new calf. As the days become warmer you may need to remove the coat during the day and replace it at night to prevent over heating. Extra attention should also be paid to calf health while they are wearing a coat, as monitoring breathing rate and body condition will be more difficult. Achieving adequate passive transfer of immunity is an important step in starting healthy babies off on the right track.
