Montessori Alternative Public School Society (MAPSS) was formed in 1999 when a dedicated Montessori educator and group of parents proposed that children will benefit from the Montessori method if offered through the Calgary’s public school system. MAPSS approached the CBE with a proposal to offer public Montessori as an alternative choice for parents. The proposal was accepted and MAPSS worked to raise necessary funds to bridge the financial gap between CBE funding and the ad...ditional costs for Montessori education. Since then, MAPSS has raised almost $1 million dollars for our three Montessori schools. The financial support of MAPSS and Parent Councils ensures our children experience the essentials of the Montessori method. The Board looks forward to its continued support of Montessori education, including stable Montessori funding within the CBE schools and increasing parent participation within our Montessori school communities.

It is with great sadness, and heavy hearts that we convey MAPSS has lost a member of our family over the weekend. Stephan Brandt was on the MAPSS board of directors from 2015 to 2019. He worked very closely with others in the Montessori community to help advocate and provide awareness to the importance of MAPSS within the CBE as an alternative program, as well as within the Montessori community itself. Stephan’s hard work, and dedication within our community will not be forgotten! We send our deepest sympathy, and condolences to Stephan’s family, friends and co-workers during this extremely difficult time.
