We're receiving a number of enquiries about group B strep screening and treatment following the publication of a media story in the south of England today. We... are unable to respond to individual enquiries or give free information and advice, but there is a page of resources on this topic on Sara's website. Sara has also authored a book, Group B Strep Explained (2019) which you may find helpful if you are making decisions about this issue. All screening tests and treatments have pros and cons, and screening and treatment for GBS is particularly problematic, as this involves giving antibiotics in labour, which means that babies are deprived of the healthy bacteria that they need. Routine screening for group B strep is not recommended in the UK. Several studies have shown that this leads to overtreatment. It is always worth looking at the issues to get a full picture, and looking beyond the headlines. One other important fact to bear in mind if you are being asked about this news story is that there is a difference between early onset GBS disease and late onset GBS disease. The latter (which we believe the baby in today's news story sadly had) cannot be prevented by any intervention during pregnancy and childbirth (Wickham 2019). As we await official confirmation of our next government, we call on every member of the Legislative Assembly to take immediate action to support B.C.’s materni...ty care system. B.C. midwives are involved in 25% of all primary maternity care in our province but are burning out in the absence of fair compensation and support. Did you know? There are plenty of reasons NOT to lie down while in labour, which is fully backed by evidence. Find out more here: https://bit.ly/36hyPKv

There is some uncertainty as to what links exist between cannabis use and poor birth outcomes and child development. The Perinatal Wellbeing Research Team led b...y Dr. Hamideh Bayrampour is conducting a study to collect preliminary data on cannabis use during pregnancy and its links with newborn’ development. Any pregnant person, aged 19 years or older, with a BC Services Card or CareCare, and who plans to deliver in BC Women’s hospital is eligible to participate! For more information about the Prenatal Cannabis Exposure and Early Developmental Outcomes (PreCeeDo) Study and to participate/share participation information, visit www.midwifery.ubc.ca/preceedo

After a vaginal birth, one of the most common discomforts is perineal tenderness or burning when you pee, and if there’s been an episiotomy, tearing, or any per...ineal swelling or trauma - this can be significant. Lavender is one of the herbs I recommend new mamas use to cool, soothe, and heal their tender perineum post birth. Studies going back as far as 1994 show that lavender oil can be effective at relieving some of the symptoms associated with perineal trauma following childbirth, supporting traditional use. Here’s how you can incorporate lavender into your postpartum healing plans: PERI-RINSE: Purchase a peri bottle (a plastic squeeze bottle) from any pharmacy and fill with either a well-strained infusion of lavender or more easily, 10 drops of essential oil of lavender diluted in 8 oz of water. Or use my postpartum herbal bath blend - below - in the peri-bottle. Shake well and squeeze over your perineal area as you urinate. Consistent use of this rinse significantly reduces inflammation and stinging. POST-BIRTH HERB BATH: In this article https://avivaromm.com/postpartum-herb-baths/ I show you how to prepare a healing postpartum herb bath that includes lavender, along with other soothing and tissue healing herbs like calendula, witch hazel and sage leaf. HERBAL COMPRESSES: Use any of the above preparations on a washcloth, and apply warm or cool to the perineum, as needed, to reduce tenderness and swelling. If you’d love to tap into nature’s medicine cabinet to support yourself - and other women - I welcome you to join Herbal Medicine for Women, my powerful 400-hour course that uniquely integrates traditional herbal wisdom, clinical experience, and critically reviewed botanical and nutrition science for the prevention and treatment of common women’s health concerns. We are pleased that The BC Green Party acknowledges midwives’ role in B.C.’s primary care networks. However, what we need now are specific commitments to addres...s the midwifery crisis and close the compensation gap between B.C. midwives and their counterparts in other provinces to ensure quality midwifery care remains available to B.C. families.
