A few weeks ago I was dreaming out loud about how amazing it would be to see orcas pass by our cabin... Today it happened... While we were in town! I hustled back so we could run home to grab my camera and track them based on the last sighting. Luckily we found them an hour and a half after they were last seen. So far we're not sure which pod this is, but I have sent in my photos to researchers and organizations who track the movements of orcas in BC. I went snorkeling yesterday, looking for salmon heading up the river to spawn, but I think we've missed the party. We definitely saw fish in the river from the boat but I found it impossible to walk around them in the shallows and drift back down and find them. If anything they were hiding along the bank where there were several dangerous sweeper logs that I wasn't going to risk tangling myself up in. We might try another river next week. I have been absolutely blessed with wolf sightings since building our off grid cabin in Clayoquot Sound. These amazing animals are our new neighbors and we are respecting their neighbourhood and space. The most important thing to us is to continue to discourage habituation and reduce likelihood of human wildlife conflicts. The last thing we would ever want is a wolf to be euthanized because it got too "friendly", which has tragically happened in the past. Respect their home. ...Give them their space.
