Swipe through these pics from our midcentury bungalow project and see if you can identify what money-saving element they all have in common? Each of these rooms features custom built-in cabinetry. And in each of these spaces, that cabinetry came at a fraction of the cost of custom cabinetry. How, you ask? ... IKEA that’s how! IKEA cabinetry is extremely affordable AND customizable. The cabinetry for this whole renovation; including kitchen perimeter and island, full wall of d...ining room cabinetry and two bathroom vanities cost less than the oven . It was 1/4 of the cost of custom kitchens we have worked with before. Some IKEA locations (including Etobicoke and Burlington) offer kitchen planning design services for approx. $129/session to help build your design and layout using their online tool. For installation, there are loads of IKEA installers available, including IKEA’s only certified Canadian installer, Traemand, out of Quebec. Yes you will make a few adjustments along the way, and probably a few trips to IKEA during installation to replace or add a small part, but if saving 75% of your cabinetry budget appeals to you... the extra work is worth it. There are so many ways to customize and elevate IKEA products, including upgraded doors from companies like @semihandmade or @mykitchcanada, or upgraded hardware and/or legs (check out the third party IKEA hack or IKEA accessory companies like @prettypegs and @superfrontdotcom ). Speak to your contractor about using custom trim work to build-in your IKEA cabinets. Spending less on cabinetry frees up budget for lighting and other finishes that will elevate the look of the whole space. Did you have any idea this was an IKEA kitchen when we first posted it a few weeks ago? P.S. Not sponsored, just a happy customer. P.P.S. Unique, affordable, beautiful art ... where art thou? Although there are lots of prints and art pieces available for sale, both online and in stores, choosing art for your home can be a real sticking point. Homeowners often ask us: how do I know if it’s the right size, colour and style for my space? Where should I hang it exactly? Is this too high, too low? Do you love it? Do I love it, and will I always love it? Should it be in a grouping or is it a stand alone? What if I li...ke it, but no one else does? These and so many other questions often leave people with blank walls while waiting for that perfect piece. Margo Inc.’s answer... 1. Scour the thrift stores, the antique markets, etsy, eBay and FB marketplace. 2. Seek out local artists in your community (shoutout to @justinefernie_paintings and @anita_shiels) 3. STUDENT ARTISTS!!! (Check out esava.ca)These and other places are where you will find the treasures for your walls. Margo and Jill have both collected many vintage art pieces over the years. We wanted to share a few pics of some of our favourites to inspire your own searches. Keep in mind, none of these were high ticket item paintings. They were all sourced second hand and in many cases, in rough shape, requiring re-framing or re-painting. If it catches your eye, take a minute with it. It just might be the piece you were waiting for #salamancaantiques #addisons #salvationarmy #palmspringsthrift #wallcandy #artwork #artinspiration #vintageart #secondhandart #thisthriftedspace #thriftyfinds #studentart #communityartists #retrostyle #vintagenudes #gallerystyle #artwall #howwedecorate #whatsoldisnewagain #yourhomeshouldmakeyouhappy See more

Can you put too many vintage lights into one house? Umm, Margo Inc. says no way! What better way to bring warmth, personality and in this house, era-appropriate finishing touches to this midcentury bungalow. Also if you’ve shopped for new lighting lately, you know the options are endless and it is a daunting task to sift through it all and find pieces that feel unique and personal. The lighting in this project was collected from some of our favourite sources/dealers. If you a...re not already following @coocoou27 and @eraantiques, pls check them both out. Thank you Brian and Michael for your amazing collections and knowledge. Also @siftshop in has an inspired midcentruy collection that makes the trip to the @hamiltonantiquemall more than worth it! Sharing pics from another project that is near and dear to us, as one of us lives in it now Both of us (Margo and Jill) took on major renovation / move projects last year and having a design partner who is also your side piece is a true gift during a process like this. When designers do their own houses, we overthink EVERYTHING. You need your partner to tell you when you’re nuts or when you’re not pushing it far enough. Can I really repurpose that barkcloth into curtains? ...Will I love the green tile in a year? Does the grasscloth read metallic? Etc. Etc. Collaborating with your tried and true makes all the pieces come together. Not to mention, two vintage thrifters are better than one! This bungalow was built in the late 50’s and was in very original condition when purchased from the original owner in 2014, except for a 1980’ish kitchen reno. We cleaned it up with paint and found vintage decor for 5 years before tackling the big gut job. Today we are showing you the kitchen angle of the new space. Swipe for the 2014 and 2019 versions.
