MEET OUR GIRLS - Akansha Akansha lives in a tiny make-shift structure in a slum in Bhandara District with her parents and brother. Both her parents have sporadic work as day-labourers which means they don't always have income and the family struggles with living day-to-day. Despite her family's financial troubles, Akansha has consistently maintained an A-grade average and loves attending school. MARIAM SOCIETY FALL NEWSLETTER 2019 (excerpt) "Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao" - Save the Daughter, Educate the Daughter The Mariam Society Education Bursary Program is proudly part of an India-wide initiative "Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao", sponsored by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, and spearheaded by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and the Minister of Human Resource Development.... The objectives of Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao are to increase awareness and address the deeply entrenched issues of female foeticide (sex selective abortion), female infanticide, education and health concerns of girls, most especially in rural communities. Through our involvement in this program, the Mariam Society and Grameen Foundation hosted an event for a group of our girls, asking them to interpret through poster art - "save the daughter, educate the daughter". Check out their truly amazing and inspiring works of art. Your support of the Mariam Education Bursary Program is truly changing the perspectives and lives of these girls, and they are indeed making us VERY PROUD! Photo 1: 'The girl deserves to be loved as much as the boy does.' Photo 2: ‘ I love going to the school and learning new things.’ Photo 3. ‘In our society the girl is not allowed to speak up to express their feelings or voice their opinions. It makes me sad. Girls must be sent to school and be educated. This way they can overcome challenges.'
