Hello again pre-med peeps! Following last week’s post for the start of black history month, today’s post is focused on the representation of black med students. Representation is extremely important as it opens the door to possibilities for black youth to seek out. In recent years, shows such as Doc McStuffins and Greys Anatomy have played a role in demonstrating how high coveted jobs, often sought out by a majority of white people, are welcoming of the black community. You m...ay be wondering, How do animated kids shows and/or adult dramas help promote acceptance in the medical field? Well, seeing oneself on a screen is the validation needed to incite people to pursue careers (in medicine for example) that have been almost homogenous in race. Here is an article showing the importance of representation in Montreal, enjoy! https://nouvelles.umontreal.ca//improving-the-representat/

Hello Pre-Med peeps! Happy Monday and in case you didn’t know, February is Black History Month! It is a month to celebrate/remember people and events in the history of the African diaspora that are often overlooked. It is a time to look back on these achievements and struggles which have contributed to our history. Few Canadians are aware of the fact that African people were once enslaved in the territory that is now Canada, or of how those who fought enslavement helped to... lay the foundation of Canada’s diverse society. Black History Month is a time to learn more about these Canadian stories and the many other important contributions of Black Canadians to the settlement, growth and development of Canada, and about the diversity of Black communities in Canada and their importance to the history of this country. However, Black history consists of more than just slavery. African American history too often solely focusses on that aspect of history which is dehumanizing. People of African decent have been leaders, creators, pioneers, scientists, and much more throughout history which deserves to be recognized year round. In honour of Black History Month, the University of Toronto's Faculty of Medicine is celebrating the many Black members of its community who are making extraordinary contributions to health care, science and their communities. https://www.utoronto.ca//black-history-month-six-members-u

Hey there pre-med peeps! We hope your new year is off to a great start! We wish to spread the fascinating story on former Harvard med student, Andre Churchwell, now, the vice chancellor of equity, diversity, and inclusion and the chief diversity officer for Vanderbilt University and the chief diversity officer for Vanderbilt University Medical Center, who was faced with the challenges of being black in a newly de-segregated America. It’s a reminder that no path is linear, and even the toughest hurdles can be overcome! https://hms.harvard.edu/magazi/racism-medicine/journey-here
