THE SATURDAY AFTERNOON PROGRAMME AT THE 2021 VINTAGE FILM FESTIVAL INCLUDES STANLEY KUBRICK’S ‘PATHS OF GLORY’ (1957): KUBRICK THE PERFECTIONIST written by Rick Hill Read virtually any article about Stanley Kubrick, or almost any interview with someone who worked with him and you will hear him described as a perfectionist. IT IS WITH SADNESS AND DEEPEST SYMPATHY that we acknowledge the passing of Cathyrn Thompson in Cobourg on April 9, 2021. Cathryn was a friend and enthusiastic supporter of the Vintage Film Festival for many years, generously offering weekends at her charming bed & breakfast manor MacKechnie House in the silent auction , in support of the festival event. She will be greatly missed.

GRAND HOTEL (1932) FORGOTTEN SHINING STAR - THE HOTEL ITSELF! Yes, Garbo was divine, Crawford was sleek as a panther, Beery was brutal and blustering and the both of the Barrymores heart-breaking. But there is one overlooked star, The Grand Hotel itself. MGM Art Director Cedric Gibbons ‘ exquisite Art Deco style sets he designed for Grand Hotel are undoubtedly one of the crowning achievements of his career.... Although the sets are extravagant, there’s nothing about them that feels artificial. After all, this is a movie set in the finest hotel in Berlin, the sets need to exude an aura of luxury and represent the epitome of early 1930s glamour. But the sets are so believable as a lavish hotel, it’s very easy to forget Grand Hotel was filmed on a Hollywood soundstage and not on location. The sets are so breathtaking, people do look at them and think, I want to go there! If you’re a lover of Art Deco style, you’ll desperately want to believe this was a real hotel you could go visit. The hotel may not be real, but you’ll wish the sets had been preserved and put in a museum somewhere. These were movie sets that went far beyond being sets and were works of art.
