Thank you to these three young men for helping to evacuate seniors from the Citadel Mews during the fire. We are so fortunate to have people like you in our community https://edmonton.ctvnews.ca//we-did-our-best-three-teens-h
I am relieved that Jesse’s House will be receiving much needed funding to be able to serve people fleeing domestic violence, especially since cases of domestic violence are surging during the pandemic. I am however disappointed that this is a one time grant which does not provide long term and stable operational funding for this critical service. I spoke in the Legislature April 15 on the need for at least $1.5 million for Jesse’s House to meet all of their needs. I worry thi...s is not enough funding to serve women and families in rural Alberta. I also want clarity if the funding directed to this project is taking away funding from other women shelters and oversubscribed services in the Community and Social Services ministry, which are already underfunded by the UCP. There was no additional funding for women shelters in Budget 2021. I hope to see permanent and stable operational funding for Jessie’s House in next year’s budget.
It's Early Childhood Educator Appreciation Day! Thank you for everything you do to support our smallest Albertans. Early Childhood Educators are key to quality early learning as well as to keeping our economy going. They deserve to be recognized, fairly compensated, and given proper support during this pandemic. On May 18 there were 95 Covid outbreaks in child care programs across Alberta. Alberta’s NDP is calling for measures to help keep children and staff in child care ...settings safe and keep programs running during the COVID-19 third wave. We've called for rapid testing as well as funding for PPE & emergency hiring. These supports are necessary to help childcare centres, staff and parents during the third wave and to allow them to help drive Alberta’s economic recovery once the public health crisis is over. You can learn more about our call for measures to help childcare programs get through COVID-19 here: https://www.albertasfuture.ca//measure-to-help-childcare-p
Jason Kenney and the UCP must take immediate action to prevent further spread of COVID-19 in childcare centres and keep as many open as possible. NDP Children’s Service Critic Rakhi Pancholi will join early learning and childcare providers to call for immediate actions that would prevent broad closures during the third wave of COVID-19.
Jessie’s House, a 35-bed, trauma-informed emergency shelter in Morinville, is the first new emergency shelter in Alberta in 22 years. It opened for operation May 19, 2020 and has been surviving through fundraising, corporate donations, individual gifts and a patchwork of grants. Jessie's House is one of only a handful of Canadian emergency shelters serving individuals of any age or gender, and large families. More than just a bed, Jessie’s House provides a broad range of ser...vices including family violence outreach, case management and court support. Budget 2021 didn't include any new operational dollars for women's shelters. This vitally important shelter needs a stable commitment from our government so they can focus their energy and resources on helping Albertans flee domestic violence instead of worrying about funding. https://jessicamartelmemorialfoundation.com/history/
Thank you St Albert Firefighters firefighters for your hard work keeping us safe and for this update: Last nights Fire was the worst nightmare we hoped would never happen. A Fire in a facility like can easily have catastrophic consequences. It was because of the quick action of Firefighters, Care staff and RCMP that were able to evacuate all residents of this facility in a timely fashion. With many having limited mobility this is not an easy task. Our thoughts are with all ...the residents who suffered injuries and who are now without a home. It is so amazing to see in time of crisis the community pull together and all chip in to help out. This Fire completely overwhelmed our resources, we are grateful for assistance from Edmonton Fire, Spruce Grove Fire, Morinville Fire, Strathcona County Emergency Services, AHSEMS, RCMP, Public Works, Transit and Salvation Army who all came to assist and ensure this wasn’t even worse than it already was. The high winds had the potential to cause much more damage if not for the great effort from all the Fire Departments working together. Thank you to all who make this such a great community for us to serve as Firefighter/Paramedics. #stalbert #t8n #proudtoserve #iaff #thankyoujesus
The images coming out of St. Albert tonight are frightening. St. Albert and area first responders and emergency social service are incredibly skilled and professional. I’m so grateful for them. We are in good hands. Be sure to keep all those who’ve been displaced and those in harm’s way in your thoughts and prayers tonight.
The NDP and the Alberta Business Improvement Area Alliance are calling on the Alberta government to put a 15 per cent cap on delivery fees from apps like SkipTheDishes, Uber Eats and DoorDash. They say an additional five per cent cap on processing fees would help local businesses cut down expenses through the pandemic.
The majority of frontline social service workers are employed by non-profits. This includes shelter workers, food bank workers, disability supports, etc. UCP decided non-profits are NOT eligible for the Critical Worker Benefit. Please explain Rajan Sawhney ... Disability services are delivered by thousands of disability workers in Alberta. These workers are employed by non-profits & private companies. No matter who employs them, they are funded the same way by government. Real differences arise when you examine business models. UCP has decided thousands of disability workers employed by non-profits are NOT eligible for the Critical Worker Benefit program. This is the UCP pretending they are supporting disability workers while shortchanging most of them. No words.
Non-profits delivering frontline social services in Alberta don’t qualify for the UCP Critical Worker Benefit program but UCP got federal emergency money for their political staff & we still have a $30 million/year War Room. UCP priorities during a pandemic on display. #ableg

From Jon Carson Today on Transgender Day of Remembrance, I join Albertans in remembering those who have had their lives taken by hatred and transphobia; who are victims of violence, abuse, and discrimination because they are transgender. In 2015, Alberta's NDP added gender identity and expression as prohibited grounds for discrimination under Alberta’s Human Rights Act. We will not waver in our allyship.... We honour those lost their lives today by taking a stand against discrimination, violence, harassment and bullying. We will keep working towards a safe, inclusive and welcoming place for all Albertans. #ableg #TDOR
