Myself and Ben found ourselves reminiscing on past projects the other day, some jobs seem like yesterday while others are just a blur... I make a point of taking pictures, sometimes because I think it’s solid shot, other times just to remind us of a particular site or challenge. Anyways, here are a few of the best ones from the last little bit, some by me, some by Pat, some by Ben and some nice ones by a good friend.

Though designed as an open cut installation, this utility corridor was tight. The 8 gravity main with a invert cut at 3.8m was to be placed on the high side of two power poles and between the guild lines that are supporting them. The 6 forcemain was to be placed with a 1.5m offset from the gravity on the other side of the power poles and 1m off an existing 8 forcemain. Open cut would of been a challenge, if not impossible. This customer is no stranger to what we do and now will set the new manhole, tie in the forcemain and skip this circus altogether. Safer, easier and cost effective. @ New Glasgow, Nova Scotia

13 years ago I walked into every bank in town with a business plan to start a drilling company. Fresh off the rigs out west and laying pipe for a civil contractor, I knew this was the work I was made to do. Well the banks didn’t think so, everyone turned me down without as much as turning a page over. I went back to the rigs, overseas, repatriated a few times, obsessing on the idea of buying drilling equipment and planning on how I was going to pull that off. In an effort to ...do something, 10 years ago I emptied my savings and bought a welding machine and some torches and started a welding company. I had 3 customers, they were either friends or family, and was extended credit at Steelmac. I worked full time as a driller and ran the welding business on the weekend/evenings, convinced this would be the way to establish myself with the banks and eventually expanding into drilling. A fair bit of life happened between that day and the years to follow both personally and professionally but on April 9th, 2015 I dissolved the welding proprietorship and with some good used drilling equipment I picked up in Florida, I incorporated Maritime Directional. The first year was crippling, fighting tooth and nail for work, relying on the welding services to carry the payments on the drilling equipment. 2016-2018 were better. We proved ourselves, successfully competing and completing large projects in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. 2019 was shaping up to be a train wreck, slow spring, rolling into a slow summer. It made us take a hard look at what we should have, what services are worth keeping and what needs to go. As summer rolled into autumn, things picked up and the year, all and all was good. 5 years in business is hardly a success. But it’s something. It’s 5 consecutive safety audits, it’s a few rigs, and a lot of mud. It’s getting kicked when you’re down and getting up for more. It’s hundreds of road, rivers and buildings crossed. It’s 174 repeat customers, 68 suppliers and the dedicated few that work with me because I’d never be here without them. We love a challenge and we want to sincerely thank everyone who took a chance on us. Cheers to the next 5 years.

2020 started off with a cool little project, one we’ve been planning for 6 months. Project Scope: Directionally drill (2) wet wells at 12 & 7 degree casing alignments, intersecting the cleavage plane of the slate at 30 degrees to drill thru water bearing zones. The wells would be cased from surface and additional open hole drilled, swabbed and air lifted. Excavation of the over burden would allow us to start the pilot bores in rock. ... Environmental considerations to the drilling equipment and drilling mediums were made to mitigate any chance of contamination of the water source. Air/foam drilling was specified by the hydrology consultants. The R400 DTH hammer was utilized to complete the pilot bores. @radiushdd hole opener was utilized for the push ream and a @hhtrenchless 8 pneumatic hammer was utilized to run casing from surface. A myriad of hold ups stood in our way, from weather, equipment complications, equipment delays, equipment rebuilds, down hole conditions and on and on and on. This all turned the corner a few weeks ago and we are happy to report the demobilization wrapped up today. Super client with great support from their civil crew, unreal support from the hydrologist, who refused to go sit in his truck no matter how cold, wet or frozen it was and of course our own guys for never giving up. @ditchwitch @radiushdd @bitbrokers @comaircocompressedair @hhtrenchless @digitrak.dci Brandt Group of Companies

Air Carbon Arc Gouging - Air carbon arc gouging is a process of removing metal by means of heat generated from a carbon arc. The process uses a carbon/graphite electrode, compressed air and a standard power source. The intense electric arc used between the tip of a carbon electrode and a metal work piece cuts and melts the work piece. @miller_welders #airpak

We talk about the benefits of trenchless technologies until we are blue in the face. From safety to reducing construction reinstatement costs to lowering emissions. Below are the calculated CO2 and fuel savings from a small project we did for a local residential customer. So when we say greener, we mean it.
