April showers bring May flowers, but they can also bring expensive problems. Clean and clear gutters are important for preventing water damage to your home. After a storm or thaw, water should flow through the gutters (not over the side!) and away from your foundation without seeping or pooling. A major cause of poor drainage is blocked or damaged eaves troughs and downspouts. Minor blockages, leaks or debris can lead to very expensive repairs if left unaddressed. If you’re not comfortable on a ladder, or if your home is more than one storey, call a local eaves trough cleaning company to service your home at least once a year.

More Spring Maintenance! Grab your binoculars: It’s time to get a look at what’s happening up on your roof. The best time to check is after a heavy rain. If you have an attic, check out the wood from below for signs of water seeping down under your roof. If you see water marks or mold, you’ll probably have to repair shingles in that area outside. Check the roof shingles to see if any were lost or damaged during the winter. Shingles that are cracked, buckled or loose need to be replaced. Hire a qualified roofer to assess and repair flashing around chimneys, plumbing vents, and skylights.

Spring has sprung! A change of season is the perfect time to test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Don’t forget to swap in some fresh batteries. Also check your fire extinguishers to ensure there are no leaks/cracks in the hose, the handle isn’t wobbly or broken and that the pin is in place.
