The way of the chief Part 1 Each house has a head chief whose rank has put him in charge of it economic and ceremonial resources. All the Namima within the village were ranked in relation to eachother and the chief of the house group within the Namima was ranked in to relation to the other chiefs. All along the coast, inheritance determined rank and chiefs from all levels sought to enhance their stature by adding to the legacy they would pass on. ... The more privileges the chief owned, the more singers and dancers he needed to display them. The chief might therefor attract lowly kin to live with him and through generosity and good treatment, give them a reason to stay. Rather then risking anger and losing. He might even tolerate a lazy member. A large household was an asset. Chiefs owned the houses and the rights to select and schedule ceremonies. They own and have charge of all the resources within their territories; decided when the time was right for making seasonal rounds; chiefs had final day in all group decisions. Even when the chief have a relative or retainer the rights to fish or hunt, he has the right to the first fish and the first kill. After that his people could use the lands and waters as they wished. Also the chief would get married to a women from another place to bring up his legacy . Her sir of the family would give as part of the dowery. And so the chief would own the rights to all things passed through that dowery from the marriage. Part of the dowery would be songs, dances, masks, Names, land, fishing and hunting areas. And so forth. See more
