Beware of Darkness In this body of work the viewer is placed before thickets of alien plant life that shape-shift from aquatic weeds to tall grasses and trees. The whimsical vegetation is overgrown in the wild, gently pulsating to the rhythm of autumn, illuminated by a clearing beyond. Nicholls, who grew up on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, recalls an adventure with two friends who attempted to paddle a lifeboat across the channel from Swartz Bay to Salt Spring Island.... The island’s hillside appeared majestic in its technicolor fall palette and we could only imagine what the view might be from the top. We embarked on our journey into the ocean only to find ourselves quickly dwarfed by mother nature. The towering island that had appeared attainable from land was now dangerously out of reach. Its trees swayed gracefully in the wind while the unforgiving ocean waves left us spinning. We were forced to raise our flag and be rescued by the nearest powerboat who returned us to shore. This suite of four paintings inspired by this memory depict the in-between quality of autumn, where cold intertwines with the lingering warmth of summer and the colours of nature fluctuate. Nicholls aims to capture the fleeting nature of the season, a last chance at adventure before winter sets in. Biography Rob Nicholls is a visual artist who works and lives in Toronto, ON. He holds an MFA from the University of Waterloo and has exhibited work throughout Canada including a recent solo exhibition of paintings entitled Spirit Trails at Angell Gallery. Nicholls has received several awards including the emerging artist grant from the Ontario Arts Council. As a painter, Nicholls explores the tension between abstraction and representation in rural landscapes. Inspired by the vast landscapes of the Romantic period he seeks to reconstruct his interactions in the landscape using invention and exaggeration. Through a memory-based painting process Nicholls creates ornate worlds made up of feathery forms with a heightened colour sensibility. The sheen-like surface of his canvases allows paint to move fluidly in order to seamlessly overlay shapes and construct spatial depth. Each painted environment revisits a time of day and quality of light, from the visual experience of dusk to the vibrant colours of dawn.

Adding to his arsenal of techniques, Mark DeLong flirts with the effects of sun burnt wood, cardboard, thread, grout, and ink with ceramics. This spirited series of nine creations began partly with The Canadian Stamp, which was made with a historic printing kit from Deadwood, South Dakota. This experiment lead to a new hybrid of ceramics and the completion of found wooden sword formations. This amalgamation of form and object include incomplete and discarded wooden knives, belonging to a larger collection of weaponry. We hope you enjoy viewing this celebration of these playful hand made objects.
