Hi friends, We’re always reminded to change the batteries in our smoke detectors twice each year. The semi annual time change is an ideal time to do so. I suggest you purchase batteries with one of those big brand names and to use new batteries only for both the smoke detectors and your CO2 detectors. This would be a great opportunity to check the expiry date too. Smoke detectors have a life span of 10 years and CO2 detectors are between 5 to 7 years.... Look on the back of the units or even inside the battery area for the date code. Be sure to check the vent hole for dust. You can use a vacuum, a canned air duster or even blow it out yourself. The vent hole allows the ionized particles to reach the sensor so the alarm can be activated. Have a look at your fire extinguishers. The KIDDE brand has a recall for many models of their fire extinguishers, with 2.7 million being recalled in Canada alone. Their website will have all the details. Finally, ensure you are changing your furnace filters regularly. This keeps dust to a minimum and your home’s air cleaner. Here’s to keeping your home safe year round!
