Unintended consequences: situations where an action results in a potential outcome that is not what was initially intended. For example, regularly showing up late or unprepared for a meeting, cutting people off while they are talking to talk about oneself, showing up for a meeting looking like you just rolled out of bed. Consequences: these things make the person "un-referrable". It could leave the impression of unreliability, being self-centered, poor listening skills,... unorganized, unprepared. Your reputation is handed out with every referral you pass. Would you pass a referral to someone if they acted in one of those ways? In your opinion, what are some other behaviors that would make someone "un-referrable"?
Relationship building is critical which means there are some really basic rules. This isn't the most eloquent way of putting it; have you ever met someone who engaged their lips before their brain? Makes you go hmmmm, would I do business with this person? A while back I asked the question "what networking disaster have you experienced?" One of the submissions was the following story:... "I was at a networking event and speaking with a car salesman (Sorry won't reveal the name of the dealership here) and I asked how sales were this month. The reply shocked me! The salesman happily declared that sales were great and easy! He then gave me details on his last sale describing the backwoods old country guy and how he was able to keep adding features and upping the price of the truck. The OLD guy just kept nodding and saying yes, so he kept going. Bragging that he way oversold the OLD guy again declaring "see, sales are great when you know how to do it". There's a sucker born everyday that will take an overpriced vehicle. Unbeknownst to the car salesman, he had just described the father of the person he was talking to. Clearly he had engaged his lips before his brain and thinking it through. Would you even begin to consider a) buying from him OR b) from the dealership? Would you, in your wildest dreams, EVER refer business to him or that dealership? OUCH - hard on the reputation and not a relationship building move. Share one of your networking faux pas where someone engaged lips before brain. No names or business names. Keep it neutral.
Always good advice from Vicki Sullivan - plant the seeds now. THis applies to your network, referral sources and referral partners. Time to do it is NOW so you have momentum moving into the new normal. https://www.vickiesullivan.com/the-seeds-to-plant-now

Instead of showing up to let everyone know how great we are, show up to find out how great everyone else is. - Simon Sinek Tuesday Morning, October 15, 2019 - as you stepped out to go to work or do business this morning, who was the first person you came in contact with? Tell us the #1 thing that makes this person "GREAT"?
Those with a giving mindset take some comfort knowing that even though they didn't get exactly what they wanted, they helped someone else get exactly what they wanted. - Simon Sinek. How can I help you connect to the person you are looking for? Leave specifics if you can, name, company OR profession, company and/or where?
