Can you believe it? There are only 6 weeks left in 2020! We may all be ready to put 2020 behind us, but don’t leave your unused insurance benefits along with it! We still have some appointments left in 2020 but they are going quickly! We continue to offer both in-person and virtual appointments. Although many of us are experiencing Covid fatigue, we have not let our guard down one bit. We continue our strict disinfection protocol after every single client, have removed our... waiting room, and continue with PPE and frequent hand washing. Link to book online is in our bio.

While the second wave of this pandemic has not put York Region into lockdown yet, regardless of what happens next week and the weeks to come, we will remain OPEN for you. As Regulated Healthcare Professionals, the government has deemed our services essential. This means that if a lockdown in York Region is declared, we would still be able to continue to see all of our clients. We have not eased on any of the measures we took when we reopened in June and we will continue our s...trict measures for the safety of our whole community. This includes disinfection of the treatment rooms after every client, frequent hand washing, wearing masks and face shields, and physical distancing in the common areas. We posted a whole video about the measures we are taking in clinic and what the process is like when you come in for a session. Check it out! Link in bio!

Have you met Sidra or Allison yet? Behind those masks are the two smiling faces that take care of all of your scheduling and billing needs! They answer any questions you might have, take care of our workshops behind the scenes, and make sure everyone is following our strict Covid protocols to make sure we all stay healthy and safe! Given the Pandemic, we have had to shift our practices at a drop of a hat and they have been instrumental to helping us make that transition.... Drop a hi in the comments and let them know you appreciate all that they do!

Markham Pelvic Health 19.10.2020

We are still the same smiling faces, just under masks and other PPE these days!

Happy Halloween!! This year looks different than other years, but one thing remains the same - the busiest season at the clinic is upon us!! Don’t let your extended healthcare benefits go to waste! Book your appointments for the rest of the year now so that you have reserved your spots in our schedules . We hate not being able to accommodate people! ... This year is the perfect time to use your benefits: Many of you are working from home and have a bit more time to dedicate to your own health Our virtual appointments make it so incredibly easy to start your program You can gain some great traction with your progress right into the new year when your benefits reset And if you cannot find a spot, make sure you get on our wait list. We will contact you as soon as a spot opens up! Trick or treat everyone!!

Today is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Day. Today we remember all the little ones who are forever in our hearts. Affecting 1 in 4 women, we are thinking of you and your little angels today. Once you are post-partum, you are forever post-partum, both physically and emotionally. And you are not alone. We are humbled to support you. Thank you @chrissyteigen for so bravely sharing your story. We are truly sorry for your loss.... Trigger warning below. #Repost @chrissyteigen with @get_repost We are shocked and in the kind of deep pain you only hear about, the kind of pain we’ve never felt before. We were never able to stop the bleeding and give our baby the fluids he needed, despite bags and bags of blood transfusions. It just wasn’t enough. . . We never decide on our babies’ names until the last possible moment after they’re born, just before we leave the hospital. But we, for some reason, had started to call this little guy in my belly Jack.So he will always be Jack to us.Jack worked so hard to be a part of our little family, and he will be, forever. . . To our Jack - I’m so sorry that the first few moments of your life were met with so many complications, that we couldn’t give you the home you needed to survive. We will always love you. . . Thank you to everyone who has been sending us positive energy, thoughts and prayers. We feel all of your love and truly appreciate you. . . We are so grateful for the life we have, for our wonderful babies Luna and Miles, for all the amazing things we’ve been able to experience. But everyday can’t be full of sunshine. On this darkest of days, we will grieve, we will cry our eyes out. But we will hug and love each other harder and get through it.

The post-partum abdomen. There is so much out there about losing weight and getting your tummy back after having a baby. Whether it’s an exercise routine, nutritional program, specific diet, supplement, or workout, please remember: The core muscles don’t work in isolation. If you haven’t considered your back, pelvis, glutes, low back, and pelvic floor as well, you are only seeing one piece of what can be a complicated puzzle Consider the core elements of physical healt...h - flexibility and mobility, strength, endurance, power. All equally important to make sure you get where you want to be, even if it is aesthetics. What else is contributing? Stress? Lack of sleep? Diet? Genetics? They all play a role. Not all looser abdomens have a Diastasis Recti (DRA). And not all flat stomachs are free of them. You grew a baby in there for 9 months. Rehab takes times. Be gentle with yourself. Skin stretches. And like an elastic band that is stretched over time, may not bounce back to the same tension as before. That is OK Struggling with your post-partum stomach, whether you have a Diastasis Recti or not? Leave us your questions below!

Melissa was recently on @isidora_romantini s podcast, discussing all things pelvic floor. From prolapse to incontinence to why kegels are not always the answer for pelvic floor issues, they had a great time debunking some of the myths about getting older" and after having a baby. Hope you are able to check it out! And let us know what you think!! #Repost @isidora_romantini with @get_repost... Your pelvic floor is better off relaxed. Kegels dont do what some may think they do. Im not saying that absolutely everybody should stop doing kegels (because it always depends), but I know for me it caused pelvic and lower back pain and tension that ailed me for years. Not only that, but it certainly didnt help with leakage - any woman in her 40s knows what Im talking about. As soon as I learned how to breathe not only with my thoracic diaphragm (the area below your rib cage and around your belly), but with my pelvic diaphragm too (the pelvic floor), my pain began to ease up and leakage when sneezing or coughing stopped altogether. Im not kidding. But I was only able to achieve that with the help of Melissa Wong of @markhampelvichealth who is a stellar pelvic physiotherapist. I had the pleasure of having Melissa as a guest on my podcast Bent Over Wellness where she busted some myths and misconceptions. I think it would be a good idea for you to tune into this one. Since we recorded, she has had her baby and life for her has changed in so many ways. Check out the podcast by going to the link in my bio and be sure to check put her IG page. Does your poop look like this? Rabbit poop is often used to describe type 1 poo (swipe left). As pelvic physios, we are always interested in your poops, even if you arent having bowel issues, because this can tell us valuable information about what might be contributing to your symptoms!... For example, if you are regularly passing type 1 or 2 poops, we might be thinking: You are worried about drinking too much water because you will be going to the bathroom all the time You arent drinking enough water because you lose bladder control when you exercise or sneeze You dont want to have to use a public bathroom when you go outside Having a bowel movement makes your prolapse or feelings of pelvic heaviness worse You strain your have a bowel movement You may not feel like you fully empty your bowels You may feel like there is stool sitting in your vagina And Yes! We do use a standardized scale to describe poop !! Just for fun, only using emojis, describe what your poop looks like! Thank you to the neighbourhood bunnies for the photo op!

Tools of the trade! A huge part of our unique approach to treatment is education. We believe that the more you understand about your own body, how it functions, and why you are experiencing certain symptoms, the better you will be able to take charge to improve things. . We regularly use a variety of models and other teaching tools to help you understand whats going on. Some examples of what we use these for include:... Female and male anatomy Do you know where the uterus sits in relation to the bladder? What the pelvic floor is and where it is located Its a term many of us have heard of, but do you know where it is? Why an issue like urine leakage can be related to bowel issues Any ideas? Demonstration of therapy techniques we use to help with painful intercourse, scar tissue pain, and to help prepare for labour Wouldnt you want a thorough explanation of what will be done before we ask you to lie down on a treatment table? #toolsofthetrade #pelvicfloorphysicaltherapy #pelvicfloorphysio #womenshealth #menshealth #educationispower #takecontrol #pelvicfloor #pelvicanatomy

Reading about this story is heart breaking. Being in #Markham, we are close to a very large South Asian community. Please know that if you are struggling, you are not alone and we are here for you. . rp @motherhoodunderstood rp @womensmentalhealthdoc; rp @thefemaledoc - This week we lost a beautiful life to postpartum depression. The fact is that suicide accounts for 1 in 5 postpartum deaths, and data shows that it the 2nd most common cause of death in the postpartum period.... *Trigger Warning* Nima Bhakta tragically died by suicide and before she died, she wrote about how the South Asian community in particular does not understand postpartum depression. She was worried about how much she had changed since having her son Keshav. She didnt feel like she had anyone to talk to about her struggles. The postpartum period is one of the highest risk times for women, even if youve never had any history of depression or anxiety. And, research shows that one of the biggest barriers to getting help is stigma. Women are terrified about sharing how dark they feel. The South Asian community in particular has a bad track record here. But what is so important to know that help exists. There are specialists who are trained to specifically work with pregnant and postpartum women. Psychotherapy and medications work. Postpartum support international @postpartumsupportinternational has an incredible warmline that can help connect you with local resources including perinatal psychiatrists like myself and perinatal psychotherapists - 1-800-944-4773. Happy World Breastfeeding week! The truth is that Breastfeeding is not happy for lots of us! Sore breasts, cracked nipples, mastitis, blocked ducts, sore necks, painful letdowns... the list can go on and on. As RMT @susannaduerr once put it, for something that you would think should come naturally, it is one of the most unnatural things to learn! Luckily, treating moms and helping with soreness related to breastfeeding is one of the things she looooves doing. As a mom of t...wo very active boys, she gets it!! Pro tip: book early with her, even when baby is only a few weeks old. She books up fast, and you will be thanking your lucky stars that you have that appointment when the time comes! Were you surprised with how difficult breastfeeding could be? What helped?? Comment with a if you could use a massage!

No time for exercise post-partum? Build it into your day! A little bit can go a long way. Went for a morning walk and a bit of strength training before a nice milk break! Feeling weak through your core? Try modifying your movement to help with your core engagement. In this example, you can see modified push ups from the knees creates just a bit more core stability than full push ups from the feet. Unsure what exercises to do post-partum? Try something you already like to do...! See how it *feels* in your body. Big concepts: you should never leak (urine, gas, or fecal matter), you should never feel vaginas heaviness or pressure, and you should never feel pain when you exercise. Nobody likes that! And is a sign of pelvic floor and core dysfunction Start slow with exercising and build your way up from there. Feeling frustrated with your lack of progress? Be gentle with yourself. It took you 9 months to grow your baby, it will take time to rehab afterwards. Other questions? Throw them below in the comments Want more guidance with your own exercise program? Our physios are available to help. And if you havent yet, sound on for some cuteness .

Looking to return to running after having a baby? Read all about @btheiseneaton (Canadian heptathlete, 2x Olympian) experience with it below . Thank you for sharing your story! . . In France, every woman that has a baby has pelvic floor physio as part of their post-partum care. Pelvic floor physiotherapy should be a part of every womans post-partum recovery. .... #Repost @btheiseneaton with @get_repost 5.5 months postpartum and finally able to get back to my regular running routine. If anything shocked me about postpartum recovery, it has been how long my pelvic floor has taken to feel back to normal. I knew beforehand that pregnancy and childbirth would take a toll on my pelvic floor, but I didnt realize how much of a toll, and how hard I would have to work to strengthen it. Running is an important part of not only making me feel physically healthy, but mentally healthy as well. So when I was 3 months postpartum and still not able to run without feeling weakness and instability in my pelvic floor, I felt defeated and worried that I would never be able to return to my regular running routine again. Thankfully, I began working virtually with Melissa Dessaulles (@mommyberrieshealth) while I was still pregnant to understand what I could do, proactively, to help not only with childbirth, but recovery after having Ander. I was surprised to learn that for me, my pelvic floor strength wasnt all about doing kegels, but actually learning to relax these muscles as well. Melissa provided me with a better understanding of what actually happens to the pelvic floor during pregnancy and childbirth, and guided me through tons of postpartum exercises to get me back running. While the journey has seemed like two steps forward, one step back, Im finally able to see the light at the end of the tunnel and feel like my normal self again. Pelvic floor physical therapy should be a routine part of pregnancy and postpartum care and its unfortunate that it isnt in North America. If youre pregnant, newly postpartum, or are struggling with leaking or other pelvic floor issues, I would strongly encourage you to seek out a pelvic floor PT for help.

Its the perfect week to get outside and get a bit of exercise. Happy Canada Day! Sharing some good news. Exercise has been shown to promote a compound in breastmilk that we think helps reduce risks for diabetes and heart disease for kiddos! Go exercise (and it doesnt have to be intense either to reap the benefit). Researchers also followed about 150 pregnant and postpartum women using activity trackers and found that those who had more steps per day had an increased amount ...of a compound known as 3SL in their breast milk, which they believe is responsible for these health benefits. "The increase in 3SL were not necessarily related to exercise intensity, so even moderate exercise like a daily walk is enough to reap the benefits," said Stanford, an associate professor of physiology and cell biology at Ohio States Dorothy M. Davis Heart and Lung Research Institute. "Exercise is also great for your overall health during and after pregnancy, so anything you can do to get moving is going to benefit both you and your baby."
