WHAT’S YOUR WHY? Looking back at this video now from my show prep for the Atlantic classics gives me chills. Finding your why is the most important part when trying to achieve anything. Why do you want to lose weight?... Why do you want to build more muscle? Why you want to live a healthier lifestyle? Why do you want to compete? Where most people go wrong is they don’t relate their why to have a strong emotion connection within their life. Make it something personal and meaningful to you. Maybe you want to lose weight or build more muscle to improve your overall confidence on how you look and feel, maybe you want to live a healthier lifestyle so you can give longer for your kids and teach them healthy habits that you’ve adopted. Personally for me Prove them wrong is just one part of my why and isn’t direct at a single person, but more so those who are currently doubting themselves. It has a deeper meaning, then just achieving a single goal. It goes well beyond fitness and translates into my own personal growth, business and relationships You don’t need others to understand your why. As long as you know why its important to you and believe that your goals, whether they are in fitness or in life are not only achievable, but surpassable and the moment you start believing in yourself, then you will see that comparing yourself to others has zero value. CHANGE COMES FROM TAKING THAT FIRST STEP! For a lot people taking the first step is the hardest part but once they do, they NEVER REGRET IT! Before my client Liam approached me about coaching he was unsure where to start & felt overwhelmed. This seemed to discourage him all together from starting and made his weight loss goals seem insurmountable ... After only 16 weeks, Liam was able to lose close to 30 lbs! Not only did he lose the weight he wanted, but he NEVER felt overwhelmed or restricted! Why was it so easy? It’s simple we: Focused on 1 change at a time vs trying to change everything all at once. By doing so, Liam was able to see the power of making small changes was and made everything else seem way more manageable as we progressed. An example is I focused on getting used to consistent training before even touching his diet. Focused on progress NOT perfection. Too many people are caught up with having the perfect training program and think they have to have a insanely strict diet in order to get the results they want, which isn’t the case at all. Focused on food choices that he liked and worked well for him. By following the 90/10 rule, meaning 90% were clean food choices and 10% were what ever he wanted, it made him feel less restricted. Not to mention lots of variety to make him not stuck only eating a few foods. Liam never regretted the work he put in to achieve his goals and without taking that first step none of this would have been possible! I’m extremely proud of all his hard work! WHY YOUR STRUGGLING WITH MOTIVATION Do you know that FEELING? I was honoured to have @anthonygarvin3 on my podcast a while back & we discussed motivation. I asked him Why do you think people struggle with motivation & why it goes through phases?... A very common issue all gym goers will encounter at some point in their lifting journey is not setting NEW goals and if not addressed it can lead to a big dip in motivation to the point you might feel like giving up all together... Normally this occurs after: A successful weight loss with no goal being set afterwards A plateau in muscle and/or strength gains with no plan on how to fix this after a competition prep (bodybuilding or powerlifting) For me this came after my first show back in 2019 @atlanticclassic and ever since I have been feeling LOST in the sense of the direction of my training. My intention after the show was to bulk for 2 years and step on stage again with the goal of improving my weak points. Little did I know there would be so many ups and downs and plenty of setbacks as well. But this is absolutely not an EXCUSE! With that being said my training now once has a purpose because I’m planning to step on stage again in 2022! This new goal has lifted my spirits and re-energized my training and my eyes are on winning my PRO CARD!! I understand that there’s a lot work that needs to be done from now until then, but I’m willing to embrace it! That means my YouTube channel will be lit with a prep series and I will be documenting my entire journey! I hope everyone has some BIG goals & never stop dreaming big because once you do, then nothing seems possible! WHAT DOES BEING SUCCESSFUL MEAN TO YOU? The word successful can have a different meaning for everyone. Is being successful a sense of accomplishment?... Is being successful a sense of wealth & freedom? Is being successful achieving greatness in your career? Is being successful raising a loving family & personal growth? I think for most people success can be a little from each of those categories or maybe more from one and less from another Either way you slice it, success can’t be measured unless you first clearly define it! It is very easy to see the success others are having in a given area and assume that their life must be PERFECT, but deep down you might not be aware of the struggles they are having in other areas. Don’t let you the success of others influence your OWN path and be TRUE to yourself! Life is too short not to make the most of your time. Find what really matters to YOU & don’t stop chasing it until you get there. Stop letting what others are doing continue to distract you from what you should be doing! ARE YOU SKIPPING YOUR KICKBACKS? When most people think of tricep exercises I guarantee the kickback isn’t the first exercise that comes to mind. But when we look at how to really maximize tricep gains, then there are 3 types of exercises we want to MAKE sure we are doing:... Heavy Pressing Exercises- these will make up most of your tricep volume. Exercises like bench press & shoulder presses are going to indirectly work your triceps. Overhead Extensions- these are great for targeting the long head, which makes up most of the mass of your triceps. Exercises like overhead DB or cable extensions are perfect for achieving this. Isolation elbow extension- this is where the kickbacks come in! The main difference between is that your extending your elbow BEHIND your body. Most typical elbow extension exercises like the rope extensions cut the range in motion & by doing so you never maximize the engagement. This will allow you to experience a contraction you’ve never felt before & really hit deep up into that long head. With that being said make sure to not only extend at the elbow but allow for your elbow to travel being your body! The cable kickbacks are a great isolation exercise for achieving this and when paired with a heavy pressing and overhead extension makes for the perfect workout!
