When you start singing (even more so when you start to train as a singer) there can seem like an overwhelming amount of goals to stress over. How do I increase my range, control dynamics, understand breathing, modify vowels and on and on. All of these individual pieces are important aspects of a singer's voice but they are merely tools that are pointless if we lose track of the bigger picture. What then is the big picture? This performance by Kelly Clarkson answers that ques...tion for me. Whether you like her vocal tone, her musical style or even the song, it is undeniable that she is being 100% authentic. Being on stage and expressing yourself with such sincerity will always touch and move people in the most magnificent of ways and this is always my focus when listening to a student's voice. I always ask myself if we are moving towards a place where they can create a performance like this. If you think singing a song from start to finish, unwaveringly showcasing 3 octaves, perfectly in time with perfect dynamics like a robot and devoid of any emotion is being a good singer then you could argue this was far from a perfect performance. However, if you believe singing is a uniquely human gift that provides a magical way for us to reach inside a complete stranger, share our story and make them feel our pain, our excitement or our joy then this is pretty perfect and that's good enough for me.

Last night was a fabulous, fun celebration as my latest class at SchoolCreative graduated after a year of intense learning. In the arts industries it can often feel lonely and too focused on competition, but every time I am at an event like this it reminds me how important it is to not only nurture but maintain the community and reciprocal support that new blood always brings in to the mix. Very proud.

Last day of the semester at SchoolCreative teaching the Williams comedy class. It has been a laugh.
