Havelock Rail recently published an article, written by Paul Stevens, about Dan Graham, the new owner of Victoria church. We previously posted photos of the church, located at Cty.road 48 and Mile of Memories Rd., showing the initial stage of the reconstruction. This article tells us a bit about the new owner and his future plans.

Lynch, Ryan sawmill 1910 or 1913. Can anyone confirm that the teams of horses would be the personal property of the worker, and not belong to the lumber company.

Marmora Historical Foundation 24.09.2020

This photo from the Lynch/Ryan lumbering operation, circa 1910, was obtained from Anna Lynch Cosgrove. No names were provided, and the quality of the photo makes it difficult to identify anyone.

LUMBERING WAS US The photo below, of Charles Lummiss and his daughter, Helen (Stewart), was sent to us by Helen's daughter, Vicki Maloney. Taken in about 1940, it is a reminder of the long history of the lumbering industry that kept Marmora in good standing. Our history of lumbering is a major story in itself, second only to our story of iron ore. From the very early days of Hastings County history, lumber has attracted companies, small and large , to head into the w...oods and find their fortune. Alex W. Carscallen, Ryan and Lynch, Leo Provost, Michael O'Connors, Jack Coy (Shanick), G.B. Airhart Lumber Co., Bonter and Lummiss. This photo, taken on Forsyth Street outside the City Service station (now the empty lot at 15 Forsyth), reminds us of the importance of the industry to daily life in Marmora.FOR MORE ON THE LUMBER BARONS IN MARMORA, go to www.marmorahistory.ca/1873-lumber-barons See more

What 15 minutes of work on a cemetery monument will do. Unfortunately, there are no dates, and names listed are mostly shortened, nicknames, or aka names. Possibly, the Edward Wright and Mrs, Ed Wright, are the people found in our marriage record ledger: Edward Wright of Cordova married Eva Haughton of Cordova Mines on June 14, 1932. Edward died Mar.19, 1959. Eva died on July 8, 1954, and was interred at Zion. Anyone familiar with other people listed on this stone?

Since our photo link to the Zion cemetery has vanished, we have been working through "Find a Grave" to replace this information. The ongoing process has added 100+ to date. Look in our "Grave Matters, Zion cemetery, for the link to this information. Lawrence T. (Dan) Bateman and family is one of the new photos.
