Is it time to see a Naturopath? The focus of naturopathic care is the individual, their current health (physical, emotional, and spiritual), family history as well as lifestyle choices, and environmental influences, all of which inform the naturopathic assessment, diagnosis, and treatment plan offered by a Naturopathic Doctor. Naturopathic assessment, diagnosis, and treatment draws from a number of modalities (therapies) and is tailored to the individual. Treatments may include clinical nutrition, botanical medicine, homeopathic medicine, physical treatments, acupuncture, and Traditional Chinese Medicine, and lifestyle counseling. If you would like to discuss how a naturopathic doctor can help you, give us a call.

Do you consider yourself a kind person? The real question is: are you also kind to yourself? It can be easy to forgive others. Yet we can be incredibly hard on ourselves. Over the next few days, try to tune in to your internal self-talk. Are you constantly beating yourself up for something you did wrong, or feeling like you’re not good enough, or not clever enough?... Remember that you’re only human. At some point in our lives, we have all had to forgive someone else. And we have all been forgiven. Forgive yourself. Take a deep breath and just let it go. Your relationship with yourself, and others, will greatly benefit.

As 2020 moves on apace, we are all finding ourselves needing to wear face coverings and masks more often. Here are some tips to protect your face when wearing a mask daily: 1 - Wash your face before you put your mask on to prevent excess dirt and oil causing acne breakouts. Choose a gentle, natural cleanser that is fragrance and chemical-free and rinse with lukewarm water, not hot. Avoid scrubbing the skin - just give it a gentle wash and pat it completely dry.... 2 - Apply a good moisturizer, it not only keeps your skin hydrated, but also acts as a barrier to friction from your mask. As the air cools, this will become more important to prevent any roughness or chapped skin. 3 - Avoid strong skin treatments. Remember that any scents or medicated treatments will be more irritating under a mask, so keep those for night time. 4 - There is no need to wear makeup underneath your mask. Makeup is itself a barrier, and when a covering is added on top that can lead to clogged pores and breakouts. Makeup residue can clog the fibres of your mask as well, so it is best to keep your makeup routine to a minimum. 5 - Only wear a clean mask. Dirt and oil from your skin, as well as bacteria from your mouth and nose will end up on your cloth mask, so keep a few masks on hand and wash them after every use. 6 - Use a natural or fragrance-free laundry detergent that you know you won't react to. Laundry detergent is the most common (and easy to remedy) reason for skin rashes - and that goes double for the sensitive skin of your face which isn't accustomed to being in contact with fabric. 7 - Never reuse paper surgical masks. Although they are not recommended for the general public, you may nonetheless find yourself wearing a paper mask from time to time. It is important to remember that they are intended for single use, and need to be discarded after every use. Don’t use the same one twice. 8 - Protect your ears. If your skin is sensitive to latex or if you’ll be wearing a mask for long periods of time, the elastic that goes behind your ears can start to irritate. Try tying your mask behind your head instead, or you can wear a headband with buttons on it for your ear loops.

Low-Dose Allergen, or Immunotherapy, involves desensitizing the body to known allergens using combinations of these allergens in a highly diluted form. When given along with an enzyme mixture designed to improve communication between cells, this triggers the lymph nodes to induce desensitization in about 2 days. This safe therapy has long lasting effects, achieving a reduction in the severity of allergic reactions that can be life changing. Treatment is generally given as drops under the tongue or by injection into the skin of the forearm. LDA is administered every two months at first, decreasing in frequency as time goes on. If you or a family member would like to discuss Low Dose Allergen therapy, give the Marsden Centre a call: 905.508.4498

Research shows that sitting for long periods of time is as bad for your health as smoking! And it isnt only due to the balance between movement and fuel. Sitting for longer than half an hour at a time restricts your blood flow, potentially leading to issues such as higher blood pressure, anxiety, back pain, joint pain, and even blood clots. Get creative about movement while you work. Switch to a standing desk for part of the day, set half-hourly reminders to get up for a glass of water or a stretch, run up and down the stairs, unload the dishwasher, or even play a quick game of catch with your family pet. Any movement that has you standing up and bringing dynamic flow back to the blood vessels in your hips and knees is worth its weight in gold.

Because our body is composed of about 70% water, it is essential to drink clean, pure water for optimal health. Professor Louis Claude Vincent, a hydrologist, spent years comparing mortality rates with the quality of drinking water. Through his studies, he looked at infectious diseases, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and degenerative disease and their links to water quality. He found: 1) More deaths due to infectious diseases were found in countries with polluted water 2) Le...ss death due to infectious diseases in countries with artificial (chlorinated or ozonated) drinking water; but increased incidence of heart disease, diabetes, and cancer This is why we have opted for a Reverse Osmosis water filtration system at the Marsden Centre to remove to remove chlorine, fluoride, arsenic, chromium and inorganic minerals from the water we drink.

Is a leaky gut causing your food sensitivity? The health of the gut is a key contributor, in particular when allergies and food sensitivities develop later in life. Why might this be? 1 - The Changing Gut Microbiome... We are seeing a shift away from healthy microorganisms inhabiting the gut in many of our patients. This imbalance leads to a lack of diversity in the microbiome, bringing with it inflammation of the guts delicate mucous lining. This leads to poor absorption of nutrients and can affect the functional integrity of the intestinal wall. 2 - Leaky Gut Syndrome Having a leaky gut means that molecules from the food eaten are traveling between the cells that make up the intestinal wall rather than being absorbed properly through them. These molecules are then identified by the immune system as foreign invaders and removed. However, in the process of identifying and removing the invading molecule, an immune response is created which can flare up any time the same food is eaten. This is further complicated by the bodys own molecules being similar to the food molecules that are being targeted, and can lead to autoimmune conditions if left untreated. Do you know the many ways sensitivities can develop? Thats the subject of our latest blog article https://www.marsdencentre.com/immunotherapy-allergies-food/

Mistletoe has long been a staple in integrative Cancer care, and the Marsden Centre continues to use this remarkable herbal medicine to help reduce the side effects of conventional therapies and improve our patients quality of life and energy levels. Behind Rudolf Steiners original hypothesis for using mistletoe as a treatment for cancer is the principle of like treats like which lead him to the idea that parasitic plants could be beneficial in treating a parasitic disease... like cancer. This may seem esoteric to some, but studies show that mistletoe therapy is linked to higher survival rates and better quality of life in cancer patients. Immunotherapy is essentially allergy desensitization. During each treatment session an allergen is introduced to the patients system via sublingual drops. It is combined with a special enzyme which encourages the immune system to tolerate the allergen. The potency of the allergen is increased with each session, so that by the time treatment is complete, the patient will tolerate the allergy.

Over the counter antihistamines such as Benadryl and Claritin, as well as prescription antihistamines such as rupatadine can relieve active allergy symptoms such as sneezing, hives or itching by temporarily suppressing the bodys histamine response. They are generally harmless, but they dont address the root cause of the allergy. In the case of anaphylactic allergic reactions, which can only be diagnosed by careful history and then provocation in a doctors office, antihistamines can not open a blocked airway an Epi-Pen and an emergency trip to the hospital are necessary. Your immune system is not only your main line of defence against disease, it also defends your body against foreign invaders in the form of allergies and sensitivities. In fact, it can sometimes be a little overzealous in that respect, producing antibodies that lead to itching or rashes in response to things that are otherwise harmless. Like cat dander, bananas, and of course tree nuts and a long list of other potential allergens. If left untreated, these overreactions may le...ad to chronic health issues and worse. While many people are able to tame mild allergy symptoms as they crop up using over the counter antihistamines, many allergy and sensitivity sufferers find the symptoms too intrusive or even dangerous. Thats where Immunotherapy comes in. Having a warm bath or shower 2 hours before you go to bed may help you get a longer and more restful nights sleep, according to new sleep research from Minneapolis. Its not merely that soaking in the tub is soothing, its also that your sleep-wake cycle is intertwined with your body temperature, which peaks in late afternoon or early evening and then cools before you fall asleep. They hypothesized that the warm water draws heat to the surface of your skin so that it more easily dissipates into the air, cooling you down in time for bed. https://www.sciencedirect.com///abs/pii/S1087079218301552

Selenium plays an important antioxidant role in the body, impacting several major chronic disease processes. Research shows that it may play a role in the prevention of some types of cancer, due to its far-reaching actions on improving DNA repair, reducing cell death, and supporting the healthy function of the endocrine and immune systems. It may also help to slow age-related cognitive decline. Did you know that the thyroid gland contains the highest levels of selenium of an...y organ in the body? Studies show that a selenium supplement can have a strong impact on thyroid conditions, particularly postpartum thyroid issues. Brazil nuts are by far the best food sources of selenium, with only 6-8 nuts containing a whopping 544 mcgs. The next best food sources are fish such as tuna, halibut and sardines, seafood and liver. Meat, cereals, grains and organic vegetables also contain selenium, but in lower doses. Selenium supplements are widely available, with the Selenomethionine form being the most easily absorbed. Make sure to speak with your health care practitioner before supplementing with selenium to find the best form and dosage for you as it is possible to get too much of a good thing. Early signs of too much selenium include garlic breath and tasting metal in your mouth.

Is your digestion feeling a bit sluggish these days? Here are our top 5 tips to improve it: 1 - Chew your food properly - chewing doesnt only break your food into smaller pieces, its also a crucial part in initiating the cascade of digestive enzymes that are triggered at different points in your foods journey through your body. 2 - Take a few deep breaths as you sit down for your meal. This helps to calm your body down and move from fight or flight mode to rest and di...gest mode. 3 - Stay hydrated, this is important for your muscles and digestive juices to work well - but drink the bulk of your water away from meals to prevent diluting your enzymes. 4 - Take a shot of apple cider vinegar before meals if your stomach tends to feel heavy and slow after a meal, it helps with stomach digestion and the absorption of nutrients from your food. 5 - Take a stroll in nature after meals if you can. The gentle action of your muscles and gravity help your digestive system to do its job, and the peaceful (and screen-free) activity keeps your body in its digestive state. As the digestive health pioneer Dr Bernard Jensen said: After your meal, sit a while, then walk a mile.

The more you think about not touching your face, the more aware you become of the urge are you feeling it right now? Not to worry, were here for you with 4 great tips to help you not touch your face! 1 - Fold your hands. ... When youre sitting down - whether youre at a meeting, on public transport or just watching TV, fold your hands neatly and purposefully in your lap. If you feel like a prim and proper lady in the 1600s, just chalk it up to another way this pandemic has brought us closer to past generations. 2 - Put your hands in your pockets. When you go out for a walk, stand in your driveway chatting to neighbours on their porch, or do any activity that requires not touching anything between leaving your house and returning, make it a habit to channel James Dean and keep your hands in your pockets. Dont do this while running though, safety first! 3 - Use a strong-smelling soap. As long as scents dont bother you, try using hand soap that is strongly scented with essential oils. It will give you an olfactory advanced warning if you bring your hands close to your face. 4 - Stick up some reminder notes. Channel your school days by sticking notes all around your space to remind you not to touch your face. This is rote learning at its best as the constant reminders will help you to build the habit. Now more than ever this is a habit we all need to work on. Do you have any other creative ways to keep your hands off your face?

Drying your hands properly is as important as washing when it comes to stopping the spread of bacteria and viruses. However, it turns out that while once revered, touchless air dryers might not be the most hygienic method. Theres no doubt that its fun to watch the skin on your hands get pressed in all directions like a rubbery skydivers face. But when researchers in the UK compared the use of air dryers and paper towels in hospital washrooms, they found that air dryers left behind twice as many contaminated surfaces as the use of paper towels, including contaminated clothing. This information echoes the results of a 2012 study which concluded From a hygiene viewpoint, paper towels are superior to electric air dryers. Paper towels should be recommended in locations where hygiene is paramount, such as hospitals and clinics.
