On a bright spring afternoon, one hundred years ago today, Torontonians wandered into a new exhibition at the Art Gallery of Toronto (today's AGO - Art Gallery ...of Ontario). Inside its three modest galleries hung 121 paintings painted by seven artists, inspired by European expressionism, light and nature. For a quarter, patrons took in looming blue-grey icebergs, smooth and almost glowing; sturdy, solo Jack pines, forests of crisp white birch set against smouldering orange and ochre, and lush green islands appearing on the horizon. Some of the artists were teaching at OCAD, others were war artists, but all were members of the Arts & Letters Club, the centre around which the painters founded one of Canada's most notable collectives, The Group of Seven. Seventy-five years later, the AGO commissioned a different kind of integrated collective, The Rheostatics, to create a series of songs inspired by The Group of 7. The Rheos also staged a live performance at the gallery and released an album of the same name in 1995. While mostly instrumental and more prominently featuring cello and piano throughout, the record does have some vocals by guitarist Martin Tielli (also a noted painter who painted the cover art), and snippits of dialogue between songs, including an interview that drummer Don Kerr did with artist Winchell Price. The result is a beautiful kind of sonic expressionist landscape in itself. Happy 100th Birthday to the Group of 7!
